I was an elementary education major for 2.5 years before following my specific passion to writing and literature in my Junior year to finish up school. I graduated with a 3.35 QPA from Slippery Rock University in May of 2015! I have completed reading instructional courses in K-6th elementary education as well as courses in literature and reading assessment. First I assess exactly what material the child needs to learn and then develop a timeline for reaching the goal. In the initial meeting, I seek to establish interpersonal comfort. If comfortable with his tutor, the child will not hesitate to ask questions if I move ahead too fast. Then I want to assess his present level of attainment and how he learns best. It is also necessary to assess communication skills so that I can avoid talking over his head.
As an undergraduate at UCLA, I volunteered for tutoring inner city fifth and sixth graders. I found it natural to sense their insecurity, frustration, or lack of self-esteem.
