A Little Bit About Me...

I have always enjoyed interacting with children of all ages. I currently serve as a paraprofessional (teacher's aide) at an inner - city elementary school. During my three years in this position, it has become extremely apparent that all children....no matter their abilities....are capable of reaching their full potential. It is simply a matter of adapting my teaching style to their learning strengths. I am a higher education professional who has come to believe that the best way to impact students is to return to teaching. I have a long-standing interest in the philosophy of teaching. I am particularly impressed by "deep learning," a movement that emphasizes critical thinking and inquiry at all levels of teaching. I also believe in high expectations combined with a strong support system, and a common sense approach to the subject matter. I have come to believe that much "teaching" is nothing more than giving students the illusion that they have learned something; this is evidenced by the "cram and regurgitate" approach often taken by students. A Little Bit About Me...

I have been tutoring for many years with different kinds of children. To begin with, I tutored my younger sister starting when she was about seven years old to age twelve or thirteen. In high school, I also volunteered for an after-school program for Hispanic children ages seven-twelve where I helped them with their homework in various subjects. In addition, I spent about four months tutoring a severely autistic child, teaching him different communication skills and helping him to form patterns. Through my English and Creative Writing degree at the University of Missouri, I have earned a lot of experience in the field of English. My reading comprehension, writing and speaking abilities, as well as my critical thinking skills have all been tested and refined throughout those years.
