A Little Bit About Me...

I like to combine both direct instruction and hands-on activities when teaching. I believe that allowing students to apply their learning to real-life situations helps them to both find meaning in their learning and attach the learning to a memorable experience. I get really excited about the subjects that I teach and my excitement carries over to my students. And, when students are excited about what they are learning, they want to continue to learn more about that particular subject.
I have been a teacher for over six years. I have taught and/or tutored subjects ranging from elementary reading and math to high school math and science. Tutoring should be a tool used to complement traditional education. When tutoring there is little help in providing information to the student the same way that the teacher presents it. Tutors may also fall into the trap of simply giving the student the answers. For these reasons I prefer an holistic approach to tutoring. Every student is different and they all have different ways of understanding the material. As I am tutoring I keep in mind that I am also learning, keeping an open mind about the way a students is learning helps me to determine the best method of teaching the subject at hand.
