I recently graduated from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a B.S. in environmental science and a concentration in sociology and anthropology. I have served as the editorial assistant for the Applied Environmental Education and Communications journal for the last year and a half. Being a student who had reading comprehension in early grades, I understand the shyness and frustration many students have with this difficulty. I respond to them with compassion, and often open up to them with a short story of my own experience. This way the student feels that I understand them and are more willing to learn the material I am trying to teach them. In the beginning I will sit down with the student and their parents to see what is their area of difficulty. If available, with permission, I will contact the student's teacher(s) to see what areas he/she needs to be tutored on to bring them up to their grade level. As a graduate of both Purdue University and the University of Kansas, I place a premium of education in my own life. In my view, education is never wasted and helps people to understand various facets of the world we live. As an undergraduate at Purdue, I tutored other undergraduates with college algebra during my last year. I found these students benefitted greatly from my tutoring. I am a born teacher, and come from a family full of them.
