One thing that I have learned as a math tutor is that not every student learns the same way. I try to analyze not only how they perceive math, but I also look at some of their previous work to deduce what mistakes they are making and (more importantly) if they are making the same mistakes over and over. I also try to boost their confidence, as most people that struggle with math experience either frustration or fear. My goal is not to help the student with their homework; it's to help them understand the concepts being taught in class as well as building their level of confidence.
