As you can see from my resume, I have a Master's Degree in Linguistics. My BS is in Japanese, with a minor in German. The past four years, I have been teaching English as a Second Language (Grammar, Reading, Writing, and Speech) to adult students at Miami Dade College. In my senior year in college, I had an opportunity to work at a psychiatric residential treatment program, where I worked with adolescents with serious mental disturbances. In addition, I tutored several children throughout my college years. I also taught Japanese at an after-school program for a semester in West Virginia. I refer to my teaching style as creative and fun. When I was teaching Japanese to two young American children, I was constantly challenged with keeping their interests to learn the language. Similar challenges occurred when I taught Japanese in an after-school program. I believe that depth of learning will be determined significantly by how students are taught. I find that many students in high school are not ready for college and struggle when they attend. The reason they are not ready is because they do not spend much time learning how to learn. I believe the main job of teachers is to teach students learning skills and strategies. We all have different abilities and strenghths, but we can all learn these strategies. My teaching style is to give students a strong feeling of safety and structure and then help them to create and attain their learning goals.
