I believe everything needs to be broken down into pieces. It makes tackling larger problems a lot easier. First, I start with definitions/terminology. This is a necessity to begin learning other concepts with any subject. Second, any rules, equations, procedures or the "how to" come into play. The learn how to use the definitions or formulas they learned. Third, examples are necessary. Thought provoking ones which allow the students to follow a clear path of logic to understanding important concepts. I have a bachelor's degree in computer science.
