About Me

Experience Summary

I've been a web developer for over 20 years. I've seen the entire industry evolve in real-time with my own career path. I'm currently working full-time as a principle software engineer for a SaaS company in town. I've built many teams, architected and helped produce many enterprise level systems. I love teaching and am passionate about helping people discover their strengths and choose the right career paths.

Teaching Style

There is a saying, "between the teacher and the taught becomes the teaching". The institutions of higher education are changing rapidly, and I am equally excited about the opportunity to learn from my students and the fresh new perspective they bring. I'm a very social and easy to talk to. I'm interested in genuine learning and real human relation. Using the topic of software as platform, there's plenty to explore together!

My Hobbies

I'm a father of 4 great kids. We live in Cottonwood Heights and LOVE the mountains! We ski, snowboard, skate, ice-skate, hike, paint, draw, create, play games and every day is an adventure! I'm a "hobbyist philosopher" and I love reading! I'm very inspired by the conversations of change and the evolution of humankind. I'm an artist and a lover. I love meeting new people especially when we have a common place to start the discussion!

Other Comments

I'm a fairly radical thinker, but also extremely patient. If you offer an appetite for learning, I'll provide the feast!

Subject Commentary

ASP.NET This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I have over 20 years of professional experience with .Net web framework (did beta testing on ASP+ which became ASP.Net).
Computer Programming Proficiency: Expert
I've been a web developer for over 20 years. I'm a Sr. Engineer and I'm completely self-taught. I teach object-oriented design, functional design and have taught 100's how to code.
CSS Proficiency: Expert
I've been working with CSS since beta versions were introduced in the late 90's. I know how frustrating it can be!
Graphic Design Proficiency: Expert
I worked for a national print company for almost 10 years. I ran their entire marketing department and facilitated all the technical needs of the entire graphic design department.
HTML Proficiency: Expert
I learned HTML when I was 14 years old. I was one of the first people in the state to host a site in 1994. I know everything there is to know about HTML.
Javascript This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I've used Javascript ever since the initial release in 1996. I know the language intimately. I can help you practical choices about building a career around this language. This is my central focus and feel passionately that it should be the first language you learn, and will probably be where you spend 90% of your coding focus.
jquery Proficiency: Expert
I've used jQuery since it's beta release in 2004. I can help explain both A) why it was so important, and B) why it has outlived it purpose.
Microsoft Access Proficiency: Expert
I've used Access since 1997. I think it's a GREAT tool to explain database design. I can also help explain why you should not use it outside an educational context.
MVC Proficiency: Expert
I use this design pattern all the time. I can explain why it became so popular and prefer to teach it using (Ruby on) Rails or ASP.Net MVC.
SQL This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Expert
I've used SQL since 1997. I have the most experience with MS SQL (T-SQL), but also lots of experience with MySQL and Postgres.
XML Proficiency: Expert
I've used XML since 2000. I can explain the fundamentals in a way most others ignore. I can also help you understand why JSON is the preferred alternative for web developers.
