I was in the top 10% of my class at an elite college preparatory school and earned a BA in Economics from the University of Chicago. I have had opportunities to teach in many different settings -ranging from college labs and middle school classrooms to special education and health care settings. Through these experiences it became clear to me that not all people learn in the same way. This said, I believe that there are some general approaches to which all respond well. As a Weber State graduate, I majored in Zoology and minored in Chemistry. Even though science has always been a passion of mine, I am very knowledgeable in math. During my undergraduate studies, I have gained even more experience and improved on my grammatical skills. I had the opportunity to be an Anatomy lab instructor for three semesters. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to tutor my wife with her math. At first, this was a challenge. Math is a subject where one cannot only rely on memory. I am a believer in the socratic method. As an Avid tutor we were taught to employ this method to help students understand concepts. I think that it is better to ask questions, and guide students' thinking rather than just giving them the answer, or telling them how to do a problem. Simply telling someone how to do something or giving them the answer prevents that person from figuring it out for his or herself. If the student can figure it out for themselves they will achieve a much better level of understanding.

My teaching style might be a bit unorthodox but it is something I have acquired from past teachers and tutors. I have not helped or tutored in a while but I believe I have an easy and simple approach to it. When it comes to physics and chemistry, the math can be learned over night, the concepts are most critical. You can't read a problem and interpret the question word for word. You have to find a way to relate it to real life and what you see everyday. A spinning disk becomes a truck tire, a sound device becomes a sub woofer. Things that you can relate to.

In college I had the opportunity to work as a peer tutor and also as a tutor for high school students through the Upward Bound program. I did this via face to face as well as through phone tutoring. Upon graduating I was lucky enough to get a full time job with the Upward Bound program and continued to tutor as well as train tutors.
