My comments on tutoring SAT - Math : I received scores in the 700s in High School and have helped my colleagues and friends on the Math sections as well. I enjoy logic and solving problems.

I am a "kid-at-heart" who has a passion for helping other learn and succeed. I enjoy foreign languages and I want to share my enthusiasm with others. By traveling often, I remain enthusiastic about the subjects I study. Over the past 4 years especially, I have spent many weeks in Germany and France and have fallen in love with the people and their culture. I enjoy finding short stories and comics that help others better understand and learn the language. I also have many supplies from abroad, such as books and DVDs. If I did not major in foreign languages, I would have also enjoyed getting my degree in math education. I like math because I find security in knowing that there is always a right answer. My 20 years in education includes teaching at various colleges and high schools providing instruction in Statistics, Physics, Calculus and College Algebra. My teaching style can be called old-fashioned: the best results come from patient, focused, disciplined time on task. To learn math one must work a variety of problems, and practice them diligently. My strength as a tutor is my ability to explain the algorithms in a way that students can easily grasp. This includes the vitally important requirement of why the problem is worked the way it is, not simply how.
I taught high-school math for 14 years, everything from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, in both public and private schools. I also have extensive writing experience, including for many newspapers, and am currently teaching Political Science at the Community-College level. Thus, I could tutor math, and/or any subject or assignment that required verbal and writing skills. I tutored UTK athletes in math and philosophy, and proctored Pre-Calculus at UTK as well.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a full-time (and quite busy) professional tutor for the past five years. I currently work as an independent tutor through The Tutor Connection and Wyzant, as well as my personal tutoring service. While living in California in 2007, I was employed by the San Diego Board of Education as a tutor for the AVID program, a group style tutoring initiative to assist high school students with difficulties and increase their motivation to learn. Upon my return to Knoxville, before becoming a full-time private tutor, I tutored U.T. student athletes as an employee of the University of Tennessee. I believe in inquiry based learning, or teaching any subject by incorporating the student's natural curiosity and drawing connections to their interests. I don't taking a long time to teach a student how to approach a single problem or concept and foster their understanding of the material so that they will understand how to approach the problem on their own. In other words, I put energy into explaining why they should do something so that they can reason through it themselves in a test situation.
