As a high school junior, I was selected to attend the prestigious NC School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM). Afterward, I graduated early from UNC-Chapel Hill, receiving a BA in English with a minor concentration in mathematics. I pursued a career in information technology, most recently running Gap Inc.'s European operations. Last year, I left the corporate world to write a novel, which I completed in June 2005. Currently, I work part-time in the Swain County School's marketing department and write freelance. I was also recently awarded NCSSM's 2005 Service Award for volunteerism. I love teaching and everything about it. I believe that anyone can tell you about a subject area, but I believe it takes a special person to be able to teach it to students. Not every student learns the same way. I like to include several different teaching styles to help every student have success. My beliefs are that all children can learn, however, they must learn at their own pace and in their own way. As I suffered through my younger years with Attention Deficit Disorder, I feel that it is extremely important to appeal to almost all of the senses when teaching. As for myself, I am definitely a visual learner, so I feel that visual aids are important. I am a big fan of hand outs in full color. You will often find me drawing a picture on the board. I feel it is important to hear it and see it, and if you can, touch it. Another important teaching style I implement, is watching my students and making sure they know how to do it. Going around and walking each student through the process and asking them to do what I did really confirms that the student understands what I have taught them.
