A Little Bit About Me...

After graduate school in the summer of 2003, I taught art at the Pathfinder Ranch in Idyllwild, CA for ten hours a day for three months with a very limited budget. From 2003-2004, I taught on-line students and acted as an academic enrollment counselor for high school students and their parents at Laurel Springs School, a home school in Ojai, CA. In 2005, I lectured and taught a yearlong AP Art History at Thacher, a well known, highly respected boarding school in Ojai, CA. Finally in 2006 I was an AmeriCorps Literacy tutor working with students at Canalino School in Carpinteria, CA, run through the Santa Barbara County Education Office.
I have the ability to “adjust quickly to change” and love to multi-task. From living in Mexico D.F. at the age of sixteen, attending graduate school in London and now living in Hawaii, I have gained experience in multi-cultural environments and thriv ... read more

I love teaching and working with all children. I believe all children can learn, but each in different ways. I am available to help your child find academic success. I am patient, easy going, and considerate. My goal is to provide the best education possible. I am a firm believer in teaching through discovery and in providing a constructivist approach to learning. A variety of methods are an important means to education as not all students experience the learning process in the same way. NLP, VAK, Multiple Intelligences, PACE system, Journaling, SuperLearning with Lazanov; relaxation tapes and tapes for particular learning needs I make myself for the students. I consider each student as "special" and work one on one with each one as I believe developing relationships is a must in all educational environments in preparation for their particular vocation. Within each student is a blossoming individual just waiting to be adored.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is highly student focused. Instead of providing only textbook reading and writing my classroom focuses on having the students work hands on to create models of the systems they are learning so they can develop their own understanding of the material. I believe that all students should have an interest in the workings of biology especially related to the human body. A priority of mine is to make sure the students are not rushed in their learning. I believe that each student should be encouraged to proceed at a pace that fosters learning and not rote memorization. During my tenure as a teacher I have worked with all levels of learners including mentally challenged and gifted and talented students.
After completing my biology and chemistry degree, I volunteered for 18 months in impoverished areas in California. Following this I decided to start teaching. While at Uta ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Following my graduation from UHH, I was a substitute teacher and tutor for ESL students for 5 months. I have worked students coming from all types of backgrounds. Recently, I have begun substitute teaching again and have been for an additional 4 months. I enjoy working with the students and seeing them excel.
I enjoy giving the students individual attention. I noticed that often students are ashamed to ask for help or ask questions in front of the class. It is important to walk around the classroom and ask students how they are doing and if they understand the concepts. Many times it only then will a student accept help. Students have a wide range of learning styles. It is important to remember that when helping students. I like to break down a lesson into simpler ideas so it is easier to learn.

I feel that in teaching my goal is to effectively reach all children. Individual care and attention are the most effective ways which I feel a child can be persuaded to learn. I take pride in being patient and think that every child has brilliance to show, they just show their skills at different and varying degrees.
In 2003 I traveled to India where I began work in a village in the South teaching English and Sociology to 4-11th graders. The experience was incredibly rewarding and was a wonderful vision into the complexities of education and culture. Due to this multi cultural experience I feel that I have a great skill in reaching students with multi ethnic backgrounds, and understand the discrepencies between written and spoken language.

In addition, it allowed me the opportunity to work closely with prospective students and faculty. After college graduation I volunteered at Child and Family Services, Inc. in the Philippines. This experience included establishing rapport and counseling youth, ages seven and up. I participated in tutoring and teaching on an informal level within the organization. My passion is to teach and work with students of all levels and ages. Being and ASL teacher I must be dynamic and engaging as the instructor. From my experience I have learned different ways to interact with students to keep them interested in the material. My overall goal, of course, is to enable the student to comprehend the course material in a way that they can understand and relate to. My teaching method varies on the individual I am working with at the time. I make the appropriate modifications to match the needs of the student and their particular learning style.

I have earned two bachelor degrees which has given me the chance to motivate other youths and kids to seek the world and don't let it end with High school. There is more to life. Granting that Education is the key to success and without education there will be no sense of direction.
I love working with kids. I believe that the kids are our future and if we adults don't help them grow up to be leaders and make better choices in their lives we will not have any sense of direction.

Though I received my degree last June, most of my teaching experience came while I was still learning. In high school, I worked as a museum docent for after-school programs - at one point trying to convince 3rd graders that M.C. Escher's life and work were as exciting as the afternoon TV they were missing. While in college, I worked for Apple computer, teaching adults in one-on-one tutoring sessions in computer usage. My method of studying for my finals was to show up to study groups not to learn the answers, but to reinforce my own learning by explaining the relevant topics to my peers. After graduating, I worked for at Apple full time before moving to the Big Island and working various jobs, most recently for a tour company.
Much of my teaching style I learned while at Apple Computer in one on one computer teaching sessions. I tend to be a very enthusiastic and encouraging anywa ... read more

I have a wealth of experience in many different areas. I have a bachelor degree in Economics. I started to work with special needs children. This was on a volunteer basis and so I don't think I listed it on my resume. I then substituted in the public schools for elementary and secondary schools. I tutored in the community college to college students. I opened my own school and taught medical classes. I have taught ESL in South Korea for 3 years to kids and adults.
I like to incorporate heart when I teach. Every student is special and keeps teaching interesting. I believe in the ability of the learner and must help them find success. I am patient but firm. I know I am easy going and considerate and respectful of the students. I am a change agent in the lives of children. I am now a university student for the secondary school certification.
