A Little Bit About Me...

I have always been a reader and a writer. In my degree work, I learned how to inspire others to read critically and write well. I have many years experience as a college-level instructor. I also work locally with high school students at my church. In addition, I have worked at Writing Centers at several institutions. I also have helped with successful grant writing for several local organizations.
My classrooms involve learning-centered groups in a workshop approach. I find that students are encouraged by the examples of other writers and learners at their own levels. I provide a great deal of individual feedback on assignments. I encourage the imitation of examples in writing and the discovery of other writing styles. I come from a large family of teachers, so teaching and mentoring students is in my blood. Receiving help with homework and research was always a top priority for my parents. The key component that my parents have passed along to me, regarding teaching, is patience. During my high school years I would volunteer to help children through various charities and church. When I attended college I became an Early Childhood Education major and volunteered in preschool and elementary schools. During my Student Teaching in Des Plaines I was in complete control of a Kindergarten classroom and later a 2nd Grade class. After graduating I began working in a daycare where I created activities for children as young as 3 years old and activities and homework help for elementary students as old as 13.

I have a great deal of experience in educating students. I have earned my BA from Northern Illinois University in Communications, and I also have earned my MAT from Rockford College in Education. I have had my Type-03 Elementary Teaching Certificate since April of 2009. I have worked as a special education aide, student taught sixth grade language arts, and in the past year I have been a substitute teacher in Winnebago and Ogle County.
