I come from a large family of teachers, so teaching and mentoring students is in my blood. Receiving help with homework and research was always a top priority for my parents. The key component that my parents have passed along to me, regarding teaching, is patience. As someone who was diagnosed with A.D.D. as a child, I know the importance of patience in terms to the success of learning, and that not everyone understands concepts the same way. I began teaching 22 years ago at a middle school and later taught high school when I relocated to the beach. I also tutored at a local community college. The most rewarding aspect of teaching and tutoring is when the lightbulb goes off at the crucial point of understanding in the student's mind. A Little Bit About Me...

When I am teaching I am very patient and try to organize the lesson or my assistance in steps. I'll have the child read the problem or question, ask what they know about it, see if they understand the question and proceed. The patient style helps me see what the student's strengths and weaknesses are so I know what they need to practice and focus on. If the child has multiple assignments or tasks I have them perform the more difficult ones first. Starting with the easy assignments may seem like it makes sense but I would prefer that the student have more energy for the tasks they'll have more difficulty with.

When I traveled to Costa Rica the first time to earn my TEFL certification, I knew that teaching was my vocation. I love teaching, and I have learned from teaching students of all ages how to apply my skills to meet the needs of my students. The most important thing I've learned is that you have to find ways to entertain your students while teaching them at the same time.
