I would classify my tutoring style as "old school." Ladies and gentlemen, the best way to learn a problem-based subject such as math or chemistry is to solve problems; there are no short cuts. I am a recently retired engineer. I spent last summer working in a City of Detroit grade school as a tutor. About ten years ago I taught Environmental Science classes at Wayne State as an adjunct faculty. This is the only official experience I have had teaching/tutoring; however during my academic career I frequently explained course material to fellow students and to study partners. During the 30 years I worked as a Chemist and as an Engineer I was frequently asked to explain technical information to a lay audience since I seemed to have a knack for doing just that.

I use a variety of teaching styles while instructing students. Alternating between styles helps to keep minds engaged and participation at a maximum. When covering content I use many examples that relate to real life, that way students can relate it to something they have experienced or seen. I also like performing small-scale experiments and labs. I will use power point presentations as well as the overhead for drawings, notes, and discussion. There are many websites that I make use of, the websites that I use are usually hands on and require students to think and solve problems on their own.
