I'm Here to Help!!!

I have often thought about becoming a teacher and have been told by friends, families and previous instructors in my own learning I would make a good one but I feel my personality would be better served in a more laid back and less rigid atmosphere. I am very laid back, amiable and have a strong passion for what I've learned and what I do (the whole aspiring writer thing I mentioned earlier).
I am a twenty eighty year old graduate of the University at Albany where I received my Bachelors in English Lit. in 2011. I have no previous teaching or tutoring experience but that does not mean I lack the knowledge or skill necessary to help one learn and grow. I am an avid reader and aspiring writer and try to put thought to paper every day.

Certified Public Librarian

After six years of social work experience as a caseworker for Westchester County Department of Social Services where I worked extensively with families and children with special needs, I returned to college to receive my Master's degree in Library and Information Science. In 1978 I started my librarian career at the New York State Library, as a reference librarian specializing in the humanities, social sciences and legal research. I soon became coordinator of staff training (for a staff of over 200), both organizing and teaching classes in many subjects, and was liason with the New York State Data Center and Census Bureau. My interest and love of teaching and working with people led to having responsibility for overseeing the SUNY internship program, providing guidance and training to students. I also had a role as Chair of numerous committees, including disability awareness and ergonomi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy helping students understand the principles they are dealing with, rather than focusing on helping them simply "get the answer" to the problem at hand. My goal is for them to be able to generalize the concept and apply it in different contexts. To develop interest, I seek to discuss related information or similar problems as much as possible. For Physics in particular, this approach is key to providing a sound foundation for future learning.
Most of my career has been spent at IBM, where I built on my Physics background for a broad range of opportunities. I am now seeking to move into a teaching career and plan to start a Masters in Teaching in the Fall of 2009. During my educational development, I taught for three years in undergraduate and graduate school as part of the duties of a teaching Assistant. I have tutored secondary school students for the last 5 years in M ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I believe teaching is more than just showing how to solve a problem, but is helping the student to discover the “bigger picture”. For that reason, I ask a lot of questions to ensure that a student is not just learning by rote, but understands a topic within its larger context. In that way, he or she is learning not only how to solve a particular problem or answer a specific question, but also how to apply it to other problems in the future. I also like to make problems relevant. Students often complain that there is no reason to study something – math, for example. But I like to show that indeed, they use it all the time and that it can be fun. Learning should not only be effective, but enjoyable as well.
At my Ivy League college, we were taught not just facts, but how to learn. This invaluable skill has stood me well and put me in an excellent position to teach. I have continued ... read more

I love working with all students, but I most like teaching in challenging situations. I have worked as an alternative education teacher for almost seven years. In addition, I have tutored English, US History and GED prepartion at teen shelters and homeless shelters. I believe my strength is getting the students, I work with, to feel confident in themselves and their abilities.
As a trained English teacher and published writer, I am dedicated to working with students to improve their writing skills. I earned degrees in English from SUNY New Paltz and San Francisco State University and later went back to get my teaching certification. I have three book publication credits and am an experienced and professional writer. I really enjoy a challenge and that is why I teach "at risk" students in an alternative school setting. As a tutor, I hope to continue to find fulfillment in facilitating enjoyable learning and in giving students the individual attention that is needed to succeed. I have long been interested in alternative teaching methods, including Waldorf-Steiner and Montessori styles of teaching, for the way that they focus on holistic and hands-on learning. I value an approach to teaching that is empathetic and is tailored not only to what a student needs, but to his or her current strengths and abilities.
My experience as a teacher has nurtured within me a deep respect for children as thinkers, and ultimately "real" people. In my position at Spence's Farm, I was responsible for a group of 5-8 year olds. I enjoyed being with kids, who inspired me to observe and innovate, two talents that I had to perfect in order to develop fun and effective lesson plans and field trips. I also observed that chi ... read more

I received a technology degree in 1975. Several years later I returned to college to persue a Physics/Mechanical Engineering Degree from SUNY New Paltz and RPI. My wife and I homeschooled our children through the primary grades. I taught sciences. While an Employee at IBM, I wrote and taight technical courses. Physics is my forte and I love talking about and teaching the subject. I am especially helpfull to students challenged by word problems. Throughout college I would host study groups in Physics and Chemistry. I currently am a financial advisor.

I have worked as a freelance writer for various publications in the Hudson Valley area since 2002 and I have a BA in Writing. I have taught at schools in New York City and in Hudson Valley as well as created elective programming for private schools since 1998. Interpreting text is the core of both my work and my studies. I have an excellent understanding on how to break down any text, both fiction and nonfiction. I also have wide-ranging experience in writing academic essays and reports.
When it comes to reading, I believe most of all in creating an interest for the subject. That goes for all ages. I encourage students to bring reading materials that peek their interest to help them enjoy while learning. For some students that would be fiction, for others it's a game manual. The idea is to start where the child's curiosity lays and move from there into the required readings. For ... read more

I teach the way I counsel--by expecting self-responsibility. I use humor to enhance one's motivation to seek out and focus on one's strengths. I am not a coddler--I believe that higher expectations result in higher performance. When coupled with empathy, faith in the individual and strong foundations of skills, success is inevitable.
I have been supervising other counselors since 1997 in their report-writing. I take pride in my writing skills in the face of a field riddled with nurses who prefer abbreviations to beautifully executed coherent sentences. The sheer eloquence of being able to deliver a report allowing the reader to infer the true meaning of your words, while not providing any statements that will give fuel to a legal representative is a time-earned skill. In addition to my writing skills, I have 14 years of business skills, extensive analytical skills, which t ... read more
