I have a Bachelor's in Computer Science with focus on the Microsoft languages (C++, C#, ASP, dotNEt, etc.) The requirements for this degree was heavy in math. I do, however, feel better qualified in verbal and writing skills. I also have a minor in Philosophy and Theology. This ties in with my High School and middle school upbringing, having attended a Catholic middle and High school as well as the University I attended being a Baptist school. My full time job (Monday - Friday mornings) is as a programmer, so my technical knowledge is always fresh in my mind.
My tutoring style is somewhat laid-back with serious undertones. I feel the best way to learn is to not have information force fed, but to allow the individual to glean knowledge and come to an understanding of the subject gradually. I'm very laid back and just enjoy being around children. Every child is different and has different interests and difficulties. One box does not fit all, and it's a matter of figuring out how to relate to the child at hand and make the subject matter appealing to them that I enjoy the most.
I spent 4 years in college teaching preschool, as well as 2 years as a high-needs reading tutor for the psych dept at my university. My degree is in journalism/English Lit and my GPA in Lit was a 3.7. I have three children of my own, and they are all avid readers, with my oldest reading 150+ books per school year. I'm well-aware of the current and classical children's literature out there, and taught both of my older children to read - at 5 and 3, respectively.
