Reading is the Key to Success!

My teaching style is flexible. I create a lesson plan that is individualized and benficial to that of the student I am tutoring. I adapt and adjust the curriculum to what is of primary importance to my student.
I have worked in the field of education as a teacher for 30 years. I have taught basic skills in foundations of Reading to middle school students. I have also taught all subject areas to elementary school children. The most memorable and most valuable experience in my career was teaching first graders how to read. It takes a trained professional to be able to lay out the framework children need to learn how to read. Reading skills on the first grade level are the most rudimentary and applicable to all grade levels there after.

Having grown up in a family where education was highly valued. not only did I desire to attain my own college degree, but I was strongly devoted to the idea of helping educate others. My B.A. is in English with a concentration in secondary education. Initially, I chose to teach in Catholic elementary schools which included teaching and learning techniques to teach children from grades 1 to 8. Eventually, I joined the public school legion and taught high school English for nine years. I also taught the Composition and Research Writing Class at James H. Groves High School. Currently, completing my job with Club Z, a tutoring agency targeting No Child Left Behind students as identified by the school district.

I enjoy helping people learn something new. I think anyone can do anything they put their mind to. I would allow the student time to get to know me so they would feel comfortable with me. Students sometimes feel too vulnerable to try things when they don't know someone because they do not want to make mistakes. I would let them know that the only way to get better at something is to make mistakes so they can learn from those mistakes by making the appropriate corrections. Confidence is key. Positive work ethics allow me to help and give students the confidence necessary to complete anything put before them.
Graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism has given me the easygoing background to educate others in writing and reading. I am always the person asked by friends and family when they are not sure how to spell a word or if they need something to be proofread. I enjoy read ... read more

I like to incorporate a sense of humor in my teaching - I believe when children can relax they are much more open to learning. I am also sensitive to children's different learning styles whether they are visual, auditory or kinesthetic, and tailor my approach accordingly. No two sessions are ever the same! Each student has unique needs and challenges and my job is to work "through the maze" and carry the message to the brain. I try to use practical and relevant examples whenever I can and appeal to the student's personal frame of reference so the goal of really "learning" versus "memorizing" can be met.
I have been a substitute teacher for the past two years covering all grade levels from pre-k three up to senior year in high school. I am a Master's Degree candidate in Elementary Education at Wilmington University. I enjoy students at every level and am amazed at what a difference ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been writing for 30 years; I have been published over 200 times, in approximately 106 periodicals. In 2008, samples of my earliest writings, as well as recent-front page articles, from the Newark Post, became part of the Special Collection [Delaware Authors] at the University of Delaware Morris Library. As an instructor, and as a tutor, I have taught prewriting techniques, reading comprehension, pronunciation, grammar, general writing and TOEFL Preparation. I have a B.A. in English from the University of Massachusetts, in Dorchester, MA, a commercial arts certificate, technical writing training and a TESOL/TEFL Certificate. I am a decent artist. I know computers, and am quite skilled at surfing the Internet.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate from Rowan University’s MA in Writing, I tutored in one-on-one sessions students in history, business, political science, English, creative writing, and composition, providing brainstorming assistance, discussion time, and research help, as well as composition reviews to get their rough drafts rolling. I participated in small-group tutoring that brought together students from integrated college comp. classes, both ESL and non-ESL, in an effort to improve their reading/writing, thinking, and analytical skills. My experience is coupled with a strong theoretical foundation: I hold a BA in Communications with minors in English and creative writing from Rowan.
Tutoring is as personally a rewarding experience as learning. My philosophy is to help students understand that learning and becoming better writers, readers, and thinkers—better people, in fact—is something worth st ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I taught 9th and 10th grade English at the Secondary level at Washington Twp. High School for two years, as well as completed my student teaching there. I left when I got married to teach in Maryland for four years, and then moved home again. I tutored for approximately a year and then found a job at Clayton High School. I taught 7th, 8th and all high school level Special Education English classes as well as 7th grade Regular Ed. English.
I feel my teaching style is student-centered, enthusiastic, and focused. I love working with children and young adults. My extensive coaching background allows me the skill of being able to motivate and build a child's self esteem by setting realistic academic goals. Children reach their fullest potential when tasks are challenging, but not overwhelming. Through guidance and positive reinforcement, students can far exceed what they ever thought ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a strong educational background in liberal arts. I am particularly adept at writing and philosophy, but can teach most areas on a high school or grade school level. I taught High School students, made presentations to classes, tutored middle school children, and have taught elementary children as well.
My best teaching style involves facilitating group discussions. I particularly love the one to one teaching experiences while tutoring. I like facilitating the learning experience rather than just imparting information. It is a process of mutual discovery where teacher and student embark on a journey to discover truth.

I believe that education is continuous and requires participation by all involved parties, meaning students must be active and constant participants in their education as well as the teacher. I also understand that no two individuals learn in exactly the same manner causing my methods as a teacher to constantly change to best fit the needs of the individual. A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher I believe that students learn best by doing, so I plan my lessons to engage students with meaningful activities that are mastered with hands on activity rather than teacher lead discussion.
I have worked in a wide range of business and educational settings and have worked with students from grade school to adult. When I earned my BS in English, with a thirty credit business minor, I already had fifteen years experience working in a family run retail store. I have since worked a range of jobs including teaching business, computer and English classes. I also worked as a computer systems installer, service manager and office manager. I bring to my teaching a wide range of experience combined with a strong understanding of my subject areas.
