I recently finished my PhD. in biomedical engineering at UCLA. I also have a background in rocket propulsion analysis. With my skills, I am fully confident I can teach and tutor algebra. I have over a year in experience as a teaching assistant at UCLA. Essentially my teaching style is through showing the proper tools to use for solving an algebra problem. Once the proper tool is understood, algebra is just like following a series of instructions, much like a cookbook. My teaching style is highly interactive and somewhat Socratic in that I will ask a number of questions to the student before giving an answer. In doing so, I can diagnose what information the student knows and find out where they may be lacking. Additionally I try to communicate with the student in a language they understand. If the student is a visual learner I would try to show examples whereas a student that is more auditory, I would spend more time talking and using stories to communicate information. The combination of these techniques have been quite successful for me over the past many years.
