A Little Bit About Me...

I began my teaching career with the nonprofit organization, Teach For America. With my undergraduate studies completed in Anthropology and a minor in Spanish I came to the realization that my most rewarding and interesting work had been in working with students and teachers as a tutor in the public school system. So, I decided to move to a very rural location on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. There I spent the next four years as a special education teacher. I taught students with Emotional Disorders, and resoruce level classes in English and math with students with specific learning disabilities. Eventually, I took the lead in creating an inclusion program and was asked to be the department head. At the end of my four years, I completed my Masters Degree in Special Ecuation. A Little Bit About Me...

I had two very different teaching experiences in my last semester at ASU. The first was teaching an upper-division psychology course to fellow undergrads. I had a group of 5 students that I was responsible for leading in class discussion, providing feedback on all coursework, as well as any help they needed understanding or applying the concepts. The second was acting as a tutor/mentor for students in an elementary school. I had two students with whom I spent 2 hours after school with twice a week. I planned and created fun, academically-oriented activities for these students that were tailored to meet each of their individual needs and interests. I found both experiences to be extremely rewarding. I was able to have a major impact on someone’s understanding and appreciation of something, whether it was spelling or applying critical thinking skills.

I grew up as a member of CampFire boys and girls, now CampFire USA, and have been attending and working at their summer camps for the last 18 years of my life. I am currently a program director at a CampFire summer camp and love working with kids of all ages. After finishing classes at Humboldt State in the winter of 2005, I worked for the Northwest Regional Education Service District (NWRESD) for a year and a half. For the NWRESD I worked for a year as the Program Coordinator for their Outdoor Science School on the coast of Oregon. In the Fall of 2007 I worked for the Outdoor Science School as the Forest Field Instructor and taught highschool counselors and sixth grade students about forest ecology.

I returned to school part time in 1998 to work on a degree in physics. As a non-traditional student I was in my 30's, a single parent (three daughters), and working full time as an industrial sales rep. In 2005 I graduated with honors from New Mexico Tech with BS degrees in Physics/Astrophysics and Basic Sciences. Upon graduation I took a position as an instructor, grades 5-12, at a science camp in California for 2 semesters. For the past 2 1/2 years I have been employed as an Astronomer/Observer with M.I.T.'s Lincoln labs LINEAR program, searching for near Earth asteroids. I have wide experience and interests in both math and science. I've also taught undergraduate physics classes, substitute taught K-12, and tutored in a number of different situations.
