I returned to school part time in 1998 to work on a degree in physics. As a non-traditional student I was in my 30's, a single parent (three daughters), and working full time as an industrial sales rep. In 2005 I graduated with honors from New Mexico Tech with BS degrees in Physics/Astrophysics and Basic Sciences. Upon graduation I took a position as an instructor, grades 5-12, at a science camp in California for 2 semesters. For the past 2 1/2 years I have been employed as an Astronomer/Observer with M.I.T.'s Lincoln labs LINEAR program, searching for near Earth asteroids. I have wide experience and interests in both math and science. I've also taught undergraduate physics classes, substitute taught K-12, and tutored in a number of different situations.

A Little Bit About Me...

The biggest thing for me when teaching younger kids is patience. I never expect them to know something just because I do; they pick up on frustration which only makes them frustrated themselves. I believe that kids have the capacity to learn anything they please, and I do my best to transfer this belief to them. I never place myself on a pedestal with them, rather I make an effort to ensure that we see eye to eye. I respect them, and they offer me the same in return. For older students, I make sure that they don’t feel barred in by my (or the professors) opinion; rather I encourage them to formulate their own theories, so long as they can back them up. In all cases, I create a relationship with my students in which they can feel comfortable being honest and open with me. Positive reinforcement is the key.

I have been teaching since 2005, and doing one-on-one tutoring for just as long. I graduated with a BA in Anthropology, and an MA in Philosophy and Religion. Most of my teaching has been with children ages 10-14, though I have experience with everyone from Kindergarten to College. A Little Bit About Me...

I began my teaching career with the nonprofit organization, Teach For America. With my undergraduate studies completed in Anthropology and a minor in Spanish I came to the realization that my most rewarding and interesting work had been in working with students and teachers as a tutor in the public school system. So, I decided to move to a very rural location on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. There I spent the next four years as a special education teacher. I love teaching and working with children of all ages. I believe in encouraging children to discover what they are to learn instead of rote learning for most things, and I also believe in establishing automaticity for some tasks, such as math facts and geometry theorems. I believe that all children are capable of learning with the right approach. It is important to persist in teaching a concept from different angles until the child "gets it."
