I have spent over 30 years working in various positions in the computer industry. I returned to school to gain a Mathematics/Teaching degree (without certification) from the University of Utah. I have taught for a single year at West Wendover HS in West Wendover, NV. During that year, I taught basic applied math classes as well as Algebra I, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus classes.
I like to get a student to the point where that student can apply basic skills to complete a problem. Once the student can apply those steps, I then like to move onward to get the student to be able to understand the reasoning behind the solution to the problem so that the student can use these steps to solve similar types of problems. My favorite thing about teaching math is watching those students who once believed they were incapable of doing math become successful in mathematics. I love working with students, particularly at the secondary level, and believe that math is something to get excited about. I firmly believe that students should be guided on a path of discovery when learning math and they should explore where different math ideas came from and why they work. Students should also be given ample practice in order to master their skills, but not blindly following algorithms. When it comes to physics and chemistry, the math can be learned over night, the concepts are most critical. You can't read a problem and interpret the question word for word.
