I enjoy teaching students of all ages, individually or in groups. I find the Socratic method most useful, and with children this translates into making the subject (i.e. German grammar) seem like a puzzle that, with some effort, can be solved. I think students are best served when they can discover these answers for themselves. I have a BA in English and a Master's and Ph.D. in German (Germanic Linguistics). I have taught English literature as a substitute in junior and senior high schools, college level German, linguistics, English reading and writing and English as a Second language. Being overwhelmed with information that is just not making sense can be frustrating and most teachers don't have the time to give individual attention to each student. Ever student has different needs and I can help them focus on areas they doesn't understand as well as others. I can also show students that studying can be fun. I will graduate from the College of Saint John’s University this spring with a major in English Education. One thing I have learned in my many years as a tutor is that each student is unique. I try to be flexible in my approach. With grammar and mechanics, I have found that a directive manner is often the best approach; sometimes, however, students require clarification of ideas and organization, in which case I pose questions and share observations, rather than instruct. With reading assignments, clarification of thesis, organization, and vocabulary are usually most helpful. I can attest to such things happening with many of my students and for that I am incredibly thankful. I have done a lot of teaching and tutoring, both with adults and young people. I am committed to the study of languages as is reflected in my undergraduate studies and work experience. At the College of Saint Benedict, I graduated with a B.A. in both English and French. While pursuing my B.A., I worked in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages as an assistant to a French professor who also served as chair of the department. As an assistant, I corrected homework and exams. I also tutored individual students in French. After graduation, I worked for Concordia Language Villages in a French immersion camp.
