Motivated to help struggling students find love of learning

I love to teach and coach and think it is important to understand that everyone learns and grasps concepts in different ways. I do not have a specific teaching style other than positive because each child requires their own approach.
I have over 15 semesters of college courses most in the sciences. I find math and science to come easy to me if I am taught it in the right way and I would love to share that with struggling students out there. I have had experience in big and small schools, accelerated programs as well as normal classrooms so I have been exposed to a variety of learning environments.

More About This Tutor...

As a Senior in High School I spent a semester in Mettmann, Germany. During my stay I helped my host mom, who was also the head English teacher at the school I attended. I assisted her teach 6th and 7th graders and had the opportunity to head the classes on multiple occasions. She also volunteered to teach English to elderly citizens once a week, which I also filled in for her when she had schedule conflicts. It was a terrific experience which demanded constant adaptation and patience. After finishing up 4 years of German from Ames High School, I began my studies at ISU. I took 2 or 3 German classes every semester. Classes varied from early 1900's literature to German films.
I enjoy a very hands-on approach to teaching where students remain attentive through an energetic and lively approach.

I believe all learners can be successful in their learning when presented with learning opportunities within their primary learning styles. I am patient and able to present information by creatively using visual, auditory, and participatory modes of learning. Differentiated instruction allows me to provide students with learning opportunities to meet their specific learning styles. When tutoring students I use questioning to determine student understanding and to allow students to discover what they already know. This method gives students confidence and an "I can" mentality.
I am a detail oriented professional driven by a strong work ethic and a process and results oriented philosophy. Using critical thinking and problem solving skills I analyze and evaluate student needs and concerns, set goals, and work collaboratively to attain student success. A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned a bachelor degree in mathematics. While doing so, I have taken many educational classes that has taught the different ways kids learn. I am sure that I will be able to help these kids in their moment of need.
I truly enjoy teaching children and I know for a fact that each child learns at a different rate as well as a different way. I am sure I am able to accommodate all of these ways. It is up to the adults to teach children the productiveness of today. I believe that it is up to people like myself to do such a thing. I tutored for two years at the Iowa State University Tutors Office, Iowa State University, Ames, IA. I tutored anatomy, physiology, biology, zoology. I taught for one year at Graceland University, Des Moines, IA
I don't have a style. When I left high school in rural Iowa I was told I was retarded and would never even be able to write a check. At age 38 when struggling through Iowa State my chem teacher sent me to be tested for learning disabilities and I had multiple learning disabilities but an above average IQ. I don't teach I allow the student to learn in an environment where they are listened to, talked with(not to) and treated like they have value and worth. I treat them the opposite way I was treated. And when they do well we cheer together!

Since my sophomore year of college, I have been tutoring students in mathematics, physics, and chemistry in both college and high school. I have also since been involved with biomechanical research at Des Moines University, where I currently work during the school year and summers, which involves application of several areas of science, teaching laboratory techniques, and giving presentations on completed research. I have also competed on Drake’s Mock Trial team, sharpening my oratory and explanatory abilities, and have coached and competed for Drake’s tennis club.
By far, the biggest issue I have found with students with difficulty learning mathematics or the sciences is that there is a lack of motivation to learn, primarily because they do not understand the implications of the knowledge in front of them. Because I have studied physics, mathematics, and completed the pre-medicine ... read more

I have been constantly surprised and pleased when my students and I are able to achieve new heights in life-skills and the classroom.

I have always been successful at teaching children to understand and believe that they can learn anything from hitting a baseball to doing algebra. Each child learns differently, as I have learned from my own children. Starting slowly and building on the fundamentals will open the child's eyes and give them the confidence to succeed. Children will learn if the teacher is patient and allows the child to see themselves as successful on their own. It is very important to build their self image and show them there is nothing that can't accomplish on their own. Personally, I am very patient, creative and encouraging.
Since graduating from college, I have been instructing professionals and employees in safety behavior and safety management processes. I have learned extensive grammatical skills in the military, during my assignment as an inspector on the Inspector General (IG) team. ... read more
