Economics and Portuguese tutor, learn the different way!

I am currently a Master's student in Economic Theory and Policy at the Levy Economics Institute. I have several years of experience with economic theory, practice, econometrics, research and analysis and truly enjoy discussing it. I was a tutor for both economics and Portuguese (my native language) during my undergraduate years.
I like to have very hands-on tutoring sessions with a lot of discussion and where the student and I work together to solve any of the issues at hand. I often connect in-class theory to real life examples, and try to keep things fun and interesting. My approach and background in economics are unorthodox, and thus I will surely help the student see any of the "usual" topics from a new and different perspective.

A Little Bit About Me...

I teach the way I counsel--by expecting self-responsibility. I use humor to enhance one's motivation to seek out and focus on one's strengths. I am not a coddler--I believe that higher expectations result in higher performance. When coupled with empathy, faith in the individual and strong foundations of skills, success is inevitable.
I have been supervising other counselors since 1997 in their report-writing. I take pride in my writing skills in the face of a field riddled with nurses who prefer abbreviations to beautifully executed coherent sentences. The sheer eloquence of being able to deliver a report allowing the reader to infer the true meaning of your words, while not providing any statements that will give fuel to a legal representative is a time-earned skill. In addition to my writing skills, I have 14 years of business skills, extensive analytical skills, which t ... read more

I began to work at Regions Bank in New Albany the Summer after my Senior year of high school. While still working for the bank, I attended Ole Miss for a year, then transfered to Northeast for the next year. I returned to Ole Miss to recieve my bachelors degree in Managerial Finance with an emphasis in Investments. I am now employed for a furniture company out of Tupelo, where I am an Accountant. Although I do not have much teaching experience, I am quite knowledgeable with Financials and Accounting Principals. I have turtored a few children in mathmatics, and I also helped other classmates.
Although I have little teaching experience, I love working with all ages of people. I'm sure I would have a different approach to teaching/tutoring because I have not had any education classes or experience. I would offer a more business/economical outlook on mathmatical skills. I really like t ... read more

Currently pursuing my second Bachelor's degree, I have been exposed to a wide variety of curriculum. I excel in teaching the required level of High School and College level mathematics and also have an aptitude for academic, technical, and narrative writing. I have tutored for the past year at the Center for Academic Support and Excellence at SUNY Cobleskill. We provide academic support to students with learning disabilities and emotional challenges, but it is also open to students just needing a little extra help.
I try to highlight a students strengths and build solid study habits and work patterns. For instance, if a student has trouble focusing on his/her work, I try to push them for short periods of intense study, and then reward them with a break. Since my first degree was completed through an integrated, online program, I stress organizational skills. If I feel that a st ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I attained my first degree in Supply Chain Management from Syracuse University in 2003. After working in that field for a few years, however, I chose to change my career path. I then went back to school at the City College of New York to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering. I am happy to say that I am graduating this month (December 2010), and have not regretted pursuing this second degree at all. Through my college experiences I have completed over 220 credits in many subjects, with my strongest in the math, sciences and engineering.
Attaining two degrees has opened my eyes to many different teaching styles and ways of learning. I believe that the most effective way to learn and teach is to explain concepts and theories thoroughly before any application of these concepts. I believe that in order to really learn a subject, and not just memorize it, the theory must be underst ... read more

I really would like to help make a difference in someone's life and help them understand academics just like myself. When I try to teach someone, I always explain to them the subject as basic and simple as possible. I give a few examples, and then help them figure it out themselves. When/ if they struggle, I will be there to help set them back on track.
I am finishing up my Bachelors degree in Dietetics at SUNY Oneonta- I will be graduated in December. I have been offered positions as a chemistry tutor but denied because of my other jobs. I was a student mentor for a year in high school to students that were "slacking" or wasn't understanding one or more of their classes. I worked at Albany ARC and worked to train young adults and adults in the kitchen- which also included basic skills such as counting and reading.

I've enjoyed working with students of all ages, background and grade level in coursework such as Math,Science,Computer and Engineering courses from seventh grade through undergraduate college. By teaching concepts rather than memorization skills that usually bore the student I work with each student and their own "easiest way" of learning to increase skills and self-confidence. I'm dedicated to each individual student and will work hard with each to improve their coursework through study habits, homework assignments and test preparation. I believe these valuable skills will open doors for each student throughout their lives.

I spent several years in my last job role developing and implementing a training program on budgeting, cost reporting and government compliance for low-level fiscal staff working on community service providers in New York City; often English competency of these staffers was low. I greatly enjoyed this experience that demonstrated my outstanding ability to teach and relate well with those often not of my same ethnic / cultural background. Throughout my career I have provided instructional guidance to others.
My 20-year career experience includes competencies in all phases of accounting and financial analysis, auditing and risk assessment, and general / entrepreneurial business management. I began teaching as a college sophomore at MIT. For 9 years, I taught primarily Multivariable Calculus, but also single-variable Calculus, Linear Algebra, and several writing courses. Since graduating, I have been involved in various volunteer tutoring efforts. My minors are in Math, German, and Writing. I happen to be a black female, the first to earn bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in Mechanical Engineering at MIT. I am happy to work with anyone, but I might be a particularly meaningful match for a minority or female student. In addition to tutoring, I would hope to serve as a "can-do" example for someone who might not have dared to dream big enough.
I believe in the "practice makes perfect" approach, especially when it comes to math, science, and language study. That said, I also believe that practice can be interesting, fun, encouraging and reinforcing. I would hop ... read more
