A Little Bit About Me...

As a tutor, I work through problems/passages with a student to determine weak points to address and to find ways for the student to connect with the subject matter. Once I determine a student’s interests and academic strengths, I present new concepts in ways that make more sense to the student and hopefully interest him or her more. Because many students falter due to lack of motivation, I also believe that it is vital to a student’s continued success to explain how an understanding of the subjects he/she is studying will allow him/her to reach goals for high school, college, and beyond. I believe that instilling the confidence to learn is the key to effective instruction. Students need confidence not only in their instructor’s mastery of the subject matter, but also in their own ability to gain their own such master. A Little Bit About Me...

Since completing my formal degree training I have worked in several capacities in the field of education. I taught inner-city young adults in Washington, D.C. in all GED subjects. I worked as a Guidance Counselor and Education Services Officer for the Army for eight years. In the past two years I have tutored under the auspices of Tacoma Community College in all GED subjects. Prior to my work with TCC I tutored in the Kid Reach program for three years.
I try to match my own teaching style with the learning style of the student with whom I am working, paying particular attention to language and vocabulary usage. I also strive to emulate my favorite math teacher's ability to think out loud in teaching any kind of problem solving task.
