A Little Bit About Me...

My son & myself have Dyslexia & ADHD, plus, my son has a few other learning disability's, so the experts say. We have learned together how to make all of this work for us. I researched a lot & learned how to teach him how to make it all this work for him. He was on low dose med's for 6 months, I took him off because he learned the difference in 7th grade. No reason for any more med's. I do not think kids should be labeled as "disabled" because others think different then they do! My son thinks way different then my daughter but that doesn't mean either one is wrong. My son is very successful at his job & he is now a boss & he loves his job. He is 31 years old and a great person, everyone like him.

I like the tutoring environment because I like seeing individual progress. It is easier to assess where the child is. I believe that the basics are essential to moving forward in education. Memorization of math facts makes it easier for a child to learn new material because he isn't bogged down. I don't believe enough emphasis is placed on arithmetic in today's schools. Basic arithmetic skills make story problems easier. Types of story problems need to be practiced, not just thrown in at the end of a chapter without much information on how to do it. A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Human Development. However, before Human Development was my major, it was English Language. Through my four years at a major university, I have learned how to properly write research essays, what sources are credible for essays, and essay format. I also have had a pet-peeve for words that are incorrecly spelled and when there are grammatical errors in something professionally done.
I believe that children all come with different levels of cognition. Therefore, each child has their own learning pace. Building a good relationship with a child is key to helping them learn. When good relationships are developed children can then trust the teacher or tutor to help them in whatever way possible. This relationship builds a good emotional bank account and children will do hard things when asked. I know that all children can learn. I recently graduated from Brigham Young University in April 2011.
