Helping students learn and learn how to grow

My teaching experience is broad across subjects and age levels. Learning and teaching excite me and I like to think that attitude rubs off on my students. It can be fun to learn, and even those subjects a student does not find enjoyable, can prove satisfying. I've taught middle school and high school, as well as at Bellevue College, Renton technical College, and North Seattle Community College. My own experiences include not just teaching, but also professional broadcasting, journalism (both broadcast and print newswriting, creative writing, editing, and reporting), writing a book, supervising employees as well as students, and poetry awards.
I like students to be comfortable, enjoy their experiences with me as much as possible, and learn not only the material they need to study, but also habits and practices that will help them with future studies.

I choose a field the learner is already familiar with and draw analogies from the field to speed up the knowledge transition. A Little Bit About Me...

I taught to engage the audio, visual and kinesthetic capabilities of each student in the learning process. I encouraged note taking by creating handout outlines of the information being covered and students inserted notes into each section of the outlines and I used physical objects to demonstrate how computer systems work and students took apart, put together and troubleshot their classroom computers. Midterm tests were take-home exams for students to research information and final exams were closed book taken in class with questions taken from the take-home exams. Students worked on a project related to computers and write a final paper describing the project using writing skills outlined in class.
