I believe that in order to teach you must be able to understand learning styles of each individual child and approach them on a case by case basis. With encouragement, commitment and proper technique I can make a significant contribution to a child's education. I feel that it is very important to help a child understand that learning is a privilege and will benefit them throughout their lives. I am confident that I can help my students discover their full potential and experience a true sense of fulfillment in doing so.

I believe in the value of one-on-one tutoring, and I actively listen to the student’s questions and responses to uncover any barriers to the understanding of a problem. I depend upon regular review at the beginning of each session to both assess the student’s progress and grade my own effectiveness as a tutor and mentor. I also employ real-life examples to aid in understanding as I have found that most young people learn and retain far more when practical applications are used to reinforce theory and practice. Finally, in addition to improving grades and preparing for the next level of education, my goal is to equip the student with tools for continued success.
I have earned BS, MS, & PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering. This accomplishment required a broad fundamental knowledge of mathematics, chemistry and engineering. Opportunities for teaching, mentoring and tutoring arose d ... read more

I first start by explaining the material the way that I understand it. I also show examples to show how the problems are solved. If it doesn't seem to be taking then I start to break the problems down into simple steps and explain each step until the student understands. I also try to relate the material to them so they can relate to the material on a more personal level so that the information will stick with them better.
During my time at Hampden-Sydney College, I was a math tutor, computer science tutor, and a physics tutor. I started tutoring my junior year of college where I just tutor math and computer science. I mostly help students with Calc I and Calc for Econ problems. In my senior year, I continued to tutor math, but I tutored stats instead of calculus. I also tutored physics.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with youth, both in the classroom and outside it. I am inspired by helping create knowledgeable and inquisitive children by providing them with the skills necessary for academic success. I believe all children can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings and learning experiences and that is precisely what I strive to do. Not every child learns the same and with this knowledge I am able to modify my teaching style to fit the learning style of the student.
As an engineering major, I learned what it takes to work hard and excel in academics. I graduated at the top of my class with a 3.9 GPA. The engineering degree provided me with a deep understanding of both math and science and has enabled me to tutor and teach in those subjects at most levels. Over the past year I have been tutoring and substitute teaching in a variety of subjects with a fo ... read more

I earned my BS in Biology at a liberal arts school. My education has given me a scientific training that is bolstered with an in depth knowledge of the humanities. Through my education and personal interests I have studied music, poetry, literature, math and natural history. I have striven to integrate these arts with my scientific background. My interests and education have given me extensive training in both math and english; including practice in scientific writing (lab reports and grant writing) and artistic writing (poetry, poetry analyses, and music analyses.
As a liberal arts student, I was taught to pursue the bridge between science and understanding. My education has fostered in me an appreciation of learning, and a belief that comprehension is attainable through multiple avenues. If a student struggles by one avenue, then I believe it is my job to pave another. A student ... read more

Since childhood, my hunger for knowledge has driven me to study and learn about almost as much as I possibly could. My high estimation of learning has often led me to help others to learn whenever I can. Always drawn to math and science, I pursued chemistry in college and received my B.S. from North Carolina State University in Chemistry in 2002. In grade school and high-school I was always looked to by my fellow students for help and explanation of many topics. This continued throughout college where I gained a job tutoring at another school and also worked at the study labs of NCSU. Science and math are my passions, but I can help equally with humanities.

I have also performed extensive research at UNCC and graduated with a 3.1. I have also tutored college students in chemistry and algebra on the side.
I come from a family of educators -- a college professor, a principal, an elementary school teacher, and a school counselor and basketball coach. I think all of these members of my family have influenced me in a positive way in regards to teaching. I am a compassionate, patient person and am willing to help when people need it. I have been told by fellow classmates that I should become a teacher. I also have experience in a school-structured summer camp in which training was obtained and a curriculum was followed.

As a fellow during my graduate work at Indiana University, I taught undergraduate courses focused on helping students improve their written and oral communication skills. While pursuing a double major during my undergraduate years at the University of Notre Dame, I served as a university tutor, helping students in chemistry, communications, English and Spanish. A Little Bit About Me...

I think that in today's public education system, with ever-growing class sizes some students get thrown to the wayside. These students need a more personalized learning plan that offers them head-to-head or small group discussions. I can relate to the child who remains silent because he doesn't think his question is smart enough. Subsequently, that child starts getting left behind little by little until they feel completely lost and abandoned and become disillusioned with the whole education system. My hope is to convince some of these children that they can make their educations work for them and maybe even become the child in class that begins to want to help others learn and grow.
As a high school student, I was very active in extracurricular activities. I participated in the rotary club, volunteering at local soup kitchens. I was also a member of the Newspaper, Quiz Bowl, Robot ... read more

I had the honor of presenting my research at the 2008 American Society of Cell Biology international meeting in San Francisco, CA. I spent the past two years as a university peer tutor; I tutored other students in general (non-major) biology, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry and microbiology.
