I have worked as a tutor for 5 years. I worked as a volunteer peer tutor at my high school throughout my time there and fell in love with it. I am now a freshman at Saint Louis University majoring in biology on a pre-medical track. I have tutored in a variety of subjects ranging from biology, zoology, algebra 1, algebra 2 and chemistry to english and composition. I am a huge supporter students tutoring students. I have found that working with students helps to take down a barrier between the tutor and tutee. Students are more comfortable to work with peers than an authority. I find that most people tend to learn best when they can relate a concept to the real world. As a result, I tend to use examples, analogies, and diagrams often when I am explaining a process or concept. I also try to incorporate hands on learning as much as possible. Everyone has a different learning style, so through interacting with my students I try to understand how they best understand the information I provide to them. I am a firm believer in nurturing curiosity and trying to provide a reason or purpose for every subject and idea, even if it is not something the student finds particularly interesting. I have found that if I can provide a purpose then the student can better conceptualize and remember the idea being taught. The process of learning has always facinated me. I believe that all individuals regardless of age are able to learn something new everyday. I also understand that each individual learns in a different manner from the next. My teaching style is structured so that I try to help each student learn in the way that they are comfortable and are able to understand the material. I believe that if a teacher is able to make the subject matter fun and relevant to the student's life, then that student will be able to not only grow personally, but be able to change the world around him.
