I have worked with students of all ages in a variety of scenarios, but my most recent experience is teaching as an adjunct professor at Eastern Washington University. My course was "History 110: The American Experience." I had 52 students and we met Monday through Friday. I received excellent reviews and several of my students wrote to me or came to my office to tell me that I helped make history interesting for the first time. It almost goes without saying I love teaching. Few things warm the heart of a teacher than when a student has that "Ah-Ha!" moment as understanding dawns on him or her. I am patient, considerate, and always come prepared with more than one way to explain the solution to a difficulty. Above all, however, I try to show each student that learning is about growth and achievement in which they can take pride. As an Honors Graduate of Washington State University, Vancouver, I pursued my English degree with an emphasis on Educational Methods instruction. This enabled me to learn real-world educational fundamentals in building and presenting teaching materials. As a life-long writer, I have acquired extensive grammatical skills. My last class was a self-contained 6th grade, with a 34% ELL and 14% special education population. My class average reading level rose from 4.6 to 7.1. Of all the students in the school who surpassed the required State testing and higher District goals in both reading and math, 75% came from my class, as did the winners of the school's essay contest, spelling bee and geography competition. My first career was in medicine where I gave direct care, taught military/civilian classes and participated extensively in research, gaining a deep understanding of science biology and chemistry and human A&P.
