I learned through visual aid. So, I guess I would lean towards this style of teaching. However, if a student learns better with audio aid then I would be willing to combine the two methods to better educate the student. My teaching style has evolved somewhat since then. I mostly give mini-lectures immediately followed by student problem solving work. I then get input from the students on how to solve a problem, and then show them the way I did it. We also debate the different ways of approaching the problem. I do stress, as much as possible, the development of critical thinking skills. I find that a key skill here is that the student should try and develop the patience and fortitude to struggle with understanding complex chemical principles (easier said than done?). The best way to describe my teaching style is to find a creative way to remember material. For example, I have a child that had to memorize his prepositions. We made up a song that included them all, in order. It turned out to something like this....ABOARD a ship AS we were traveling ABOUT eight knots, etc. This style was very effective for memorizing. For subjects that require more understanding than memorizing, I prefer my "teach and try" method. This means that I go through multiple problems with a student explaining the steps involved. Then, I set-up a mock test to test their abilities solo. I therefore can grasp their understanding and pinpoint their weaknesses.
