My comments on tutoring College Algebra : Algebra can be confusing, but it comes easily enough with the right guidance! If you need a patient tutor who will go through the concepts and problems with you step by step, then let me know and I will help you improve!

For tutoring, I prefer face-to-face lessons, because it makes it easier for me to gauge how well the student is understanding the material. I try to explain concepts in a variety of ways to find out how the student learns best, whether through repetition, example, metaphor, application... whatever works! I have tutored kids with all kinds of needs and a few with pretty short attention spans :) For piano lessons, I would use the Alfred library of teaching materials, as that is how I was taught and it works wonders on new learners! In addition to reading music, I would focus on performance techniques and theory as well.

Before I begin to teach I like to attempt to understand how much the student comprehends about the particular subject. I prefer to teach globally and with examples. For the purpose of effectiveness, and to be as organized as possible, I like to start each lesson with material review time. The amount of time spent reviewing depends entirely on two things: 1) the level of the students aptitude, and 2) the amount of material that has been and needs to be covered. If the student has an exam or quiz pending in the near future, the material on the test/quiz gets priority. However, since many subjects in both high school and college have as a requirement a cumulative mid term and/or final exam, it is always in the best interests of all that additional time be spent touching on previously learned topics.

A Little Bit About Me...

Between the years of 1978 and 1984 I was a monitor and then a supervisor in a small Christian school using the ACE curriculum. They have various programmed learning booklets teaching all of the major subjects. You are actually more of a tutor than a teacher if you work with these booklets. I have experience in the four major areas of learning which are English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. I was with students from first through twelfth grade. While I was college I had occasion to take two years of college level English and also statistics up through 600 level. The English helped when I was writing my Master’s Thesis, it was 120 pages long. My committee found it to be well written. The statistics was the basis for the thesis.
