More About This Tutor...

I have been teaching in different areas and capacities for three years now. I started by teaching English to Korean students in Daegu, South Korea. Here I taught all different skill levels and ages. When I returned to the United States I began working at Sylvan Learning Center. I was responsible for running the center. Here I was trained in many of the Sylvan Learning methodologies and feel very comfortable in identifying obstacles that hinder a students progression. At which time I incorporate learning strategies that help them get over the "hump"
My style is easy to get along with. I am friendly with my students but am able to keep the boundaries of the teacher student relationship in play at all times. I do not believe in giving students answers but rather leading them towards a natural discovery of the answers on their own.

A Little Bit About Me...

Have tutored in multiple subjects (math, French, physics, MCAT, etc) since college. Served as adjunct faculty to Indiana School of Medicine and St Vincent Fam Med residency from 1993-2005. Have taught multiple paramedical subjects at National College in Indianapolis from 11/10- current. Got two english major daughters through HS math (through trig) and physics. (Hardest of all)
Socratic- I encourage questions, challenges, am willing and happy to look things up with students, know I do not know everything and enjoy revising my own knowledge as I go. Current knowledge changes continuously, and a day in which I learn something myself is a good one.

While working with an adult native Spanish speaker to improve her English was certainly rewarding, my desire has always been to work with children or adolescents, as I feel that they are more amenable to an educational program and have a greater learning capacity when given the proper opportunities. My teaching style is one of friendly leadership. Working through problems or lessons with the student by leading them through it, then working it with them side by side while explaining the details helps them achieve the accomplishment of learning without making them feel as if they were just instructed how to do it. Helping a student learn is more than just teaching them a lesson in math, science, or English; it’s about being someone that they can look up to as a role model, being someone that they can learn from in more than just an academic manner, and being someone who is there for them when they need something.
