I earned both my Masters' and Bachelors' degrees with honors from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. I really starting to help tutor people in high school. I found out that I enjoy helping people with there challenges and watching them succeed. I believe that when teaching or tutoring someone that you find a method that works for that person. That having a teaching template helps as a guide, but if you are not willing to change your method for the student they are never going to be able to retain the information for long term use.

Because of my elementary background, it is safe to say I am a very patient person and I use that skill in my ability. I'm a strong believer in the Gardner's ideas of many different learning styles and types of intelligent. Some students are better audio, tactile, or visual learners. I feel it is the teacher's responsibility to find the best learning style for each student and build on that format through scaffolding. I love nothing better than to see the light bulb go off in a students mind. This also helps them to realize that learning can be a fun adventure.

A Little Bit About Me...

I'm a student at Augustana College whose academic record has ranged from public school to home schooling to community college and and even private education. I've worked as a tutor for over 2 years at Black Hawk College, at the same time obtaining an Associates Degree. Throughout those years I've encountered many special needs students and many bright students, tutoring in subjects ranging from English, Math, Social Studies, to Computer Science.
I believe the best way to learn is peer-to-peer learning. As an auto-didact I have the study skills necessary to regurgitate information as taught by the current institutional models. This is an uncreative and highly unnatural way to learn. There's a reason no major discovery was made in a classroom -- true innovation, discovery and learning is an organic process.
