I am a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. My main interests and degree lie in medical sciences. I have a Bachelors of biomedical sciences degree with chemistry and psychology minors. However, I enjoy tutoring a broad range of subjects and having been able to tutor for the past eight years in subjects such as math, science, social studies, English, music, I have been able to maintain a general knowledge of these subjects.
I believe that teaching is not knowing the answers, but understanding how to get to the answers. I am a very organized and patient tutor and have great respect for my students. I am both patient and enthusiastic in my teaching style, believing that learning and growing offer tremendous rewards, even as there are inevitable challenges to be overcome along the way. As a graduate from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, I have been well prepared in my chosen fields. I have bachelor degrees in both Exercise & Sport Science: Fitness, and Spanish, through which I have acquired a vast knowledge of health and fitness. I have also studied abroad in Spain, and lived and worked in Lima, Peru for 6 months upon graduation from college. This has exposed me to the Hispanic culture, increased my Spanish skills, and given me experience teaching English to speakers of other languages. I like to help students use their minds first instead of relying on machines (such as calculators). When they work it out in their minds they learn the process and can apply it to other things. Reading requires the knowledge of pronunciation, syllables, root words for meanings, prefixes/suffixes, and how they are put together. It is more than just learning sight words. If one is analytical and precise in the beginning then a firm foundation is laid for using basic information to build ideas and develop new thoughts. i.e.: one cannot play a piece with feeling if one cannot play the notes, rhythms, and dynamics. The enjoyment of learning is in the confidence of knowing one knows and is able to do.
