I taught with the Bangor adult education program in the early 1980's as a graduate student in educational psychology. I taught adults a variety of subjects math, English and GED preparation at that time. I also taught English as a Second language with them. I first determine the student's learning style so I have an idea what works for him or her. Learners who have experienced repeated failure need successful experiences to help build self-confidence; I start with what they can do successfully already. Knowing the individual's interests and talents helps me tie the topic to something important to the student, and to help them understand how the topic relates to their present and future lives.
