A Little Bit About Me...

I began my educational journey in the Spanish language when I started going on short-term trips with my church.Shortly after, I decided to study the language in a intense submersion course for two-semesters in Colima, Mexico. By being constantly surrounded by the language, I was able to learn and comprehend Spanish in a short amount of time. I returned to my University in Springfield, Missouri and received my BS in Spanish with a minor in sociology. I then decided that I wanted to teach this beautiful and useful language. I am currently enrolled in the Masters of Arts in Teaching Spanish K-12 program at Missouri State University and will be certified to teach on a provisional certificate in the fall of 2010.

After living in Spain and learning Spanish as a teenager, I accelerated quickly in the Spanish language and literature program, later going on into the Master's program. I earned my first teaching credential in California where I taught for several years before moving to Missouri.
I believe the best learning occurs when both a discrete point and holistic approach are used interactively. I like to break down the concepts into small steps which then fit together into a well-designed staircase leading up to the higher levels. I am exigent in my expectations, but relaxed and patient in my personal nature.

Earlier on in my college education, my plan was to apply to Law School at MU, the university I was attending at that time. To apply, one was to have a Bachelor's degree in the area of their choice. I have always been fascinated by people . . . the way they think, how they learn, why they do what they do, etc., so I chose to major in psychology. Toward the end of my Bachelor's degree, my husband and I started a family, and the more and more I thought about things, the stronger I felt about choosing a career that was more conducive to family life . . . so I changed career paths and chose to become an elementary teacher. A Little Bit About Me...

As a highschool student I took an early interest in helping to educate my peers. I worked in several different classrooms to help individuals needing additional instruction in reading and math. As a college student I began to narrow my focus and realize my love of teaching English as a Second Language. I had several different student ranging from Mexicans living in the area, Moldovan, Taiwanese, and Chinsese whom I helped in reading, writing, vocabulary and basic conversation. After college I found myself working in my newfound corporate environment with an international financial company to help educate my customers and my peers.

Throughout high school and college, I performed at an academic level well above average. As a result, I often found myself helping my fellow students. As part of my graduate assistantship at Missouri State, I work in the math tutoring lab several hours a week, tutoring (primarily) algebra and calculus students. I also teach MTH 102, which is approximately equivalent to high school Algebra II. I also have a great deal of experience in history, literature, English, and the natural sciences and have helped other students in these fields in the past.
