I have extensive experience tutoring and mentoring students in creative writing and composition arenas. As lead teaching assistant for entry-level undergraduate Creative Writing courses at Oberlin College, I facilitated small group workshops, provided students with feedback on their writing, and wrote lesson plans designed to help each individual improve technically as a writer. I met weekly with individual students to provide stream-lined, individualized feedback. Last summer I worked in Harare, Zimbabwe as a teacher of Creative Writing. I believe effective learning can occur in a 1-on-1 tutoring situation when the tutor and the student can communicate well. Tone, mood, and setting all come into play. A tutor who is relaxed, cheerful, encouraging, and resolutely intelligent is more likely to be approachable and someone the student will collaborate with successfully. I believe in active listening and working together to establish a method of studying.
I took high school and college seriously. After college I worked for several years before attending law school. After law school I decided to combine my legal experience with hands-on medical skills, and I enrolled in a Registered Nurse program at SUNY Delhi, which I will complete next May. While I am not a teacher by profession, I spent much time in the academic support center at SUNY Cobleskill as a freshman tutoring students in different kinds of math. (ie: algebra,fractions, etc) and occasionally in english and science. I also had to lead several class discussions at grad school at times, teaching the readings or materials for that week. This included presentations and answering questions from the audience.
