College grad with teaching/tutoring experience; kid-friendly

I have taught private violin lessons for ten years to students ranging in age from 4-26. At the University of Alabama, I taught the lab component to Intro into Biology for Non-majors under Dr. Tom Graham and histology under Dr. Jane Rasco. Through the years I have tutored school-age children in all subjects, although I specialize in tutoring math and science. All of my pupils have shown improvement in their scores, with one particular case bringing a failing grade to a C in one reporting cycle.
I prefer a hands-on approach, especially with science and math. I believe an education is more than memorizing definitions but understanding and being able to apply concepts broadly. I have found children grasp a concept better when they are allowed to explore concrete applications instead of studying abstract ideas. A typical tutoring session would include a review of classroom material, an ... read more

I love helping people achieve their goals. I try to find things that the kids enjoy and incorporate those things into my teaching style. I give the students plenty of time to figure out the answer and do not get frustrated with them if it takes them awhile. When the students get a correct answer, I praise them and try to boost their confidence.

I am an active teacher, especially when allowed to create my own curriculum. I love to incorporate lectures with powerpoints, videos with discussions, and book readings with field trips. I think the best way to get young people involved in learning is to keep their minds thinking and never reach the point of predictability. The last thing people accuse me of is monotony or predictability, and it is this very quality that keeps then engaged and makes me a very likable and successful educator.
I received a bachelors degree in both history and sociology which gave me the credentials to teach Sociology 101 classes at the college level while attaining my masters degree, which I then used to teach as an instructor for nine months at two separate colleges. I am finishing up my second masters degree, and want nothing more than to share the knowledge I have learned with others.

A Little Bit About Me...

I understand the math and science are often difficult for students to comprehend. Many teenagers and young adults feel like they will never use this knowledge in "real life" applications. Thus, when teaching this subjects, I try to draw parallels to real life applications. Often students are surprised to learn that science and math is all around them. I feel that this teaching strategy helps the student understand the applications of science and math instead of simply memorizing the formulas, structures, etc.

More About This Tutor...

Being that I am relatively fresh out of college, I can relate to most students on a personal level. In college, I took many education courses and spent many hours in the classroom so I am current on new teaching styles. I can help average students excel and poor students gain confidence through learning. Many students are afraid of math before even beginning. I have helped many students that math is just math. There's nothing to be afraid of.
I have always known that I love math. I hold a BS in Mathematics and enjoy using my knowledge any way I can. Recently, I discovered that I also enjoy English. Particularly, proofreading. Even though I hold a degree only in mathematics, I have sufficient knowledge of spelling and grammatical skills.
