My comments on tutoring Math : Elementary and middle school levels.

I am very patient, encouraging, and supportive. I start with what students know and build from there, selecting appropriate materials to provide practice and continued learning.
I taught elementary school in the 4-J School District. I later returned to graduate school at Portland State University for an MA to teach English as a Second Language and taught ESL to immigrants at Lane Community College. While living in Montana for a few years, I taught phonics, reading, and math with small groups of children in the Title One program in the Eureka Public Schools. Most recently I taught English to international students at the American English Institute at the University of Oregon.

Licensed Teacher. Highly qualified K-8.

Howard Gardner's teaching philosophy aligns with my teaching style. He believes there are multiple intelligences. Therefore, some students learn best with movement or art or hands-on activities and some are very logical and so on. As a teacher, I try to incorporate various intelligences into my lessons in order to meet a wide spectrum of educational needs. However, as a tutor, it is important for me to get to know the individual student in order to capitalize on his/her intellectual strengths and improve his/her weaknesses through using activities and methods which correspond.
My experience has taken me across grade levels as well as across the world. In college, I studied educational methods, theories and philosophies as well as human development. During this time, I participated in classroom practicums (aiding with individual/ small group instruction) and then eventually student ... read more

As a student of the College of Science, I excel both at detail in quantifiable information , and the ability to translate professional speak into everyday language. I excel in English, Science, and Psychology. I have been tutoring for five years and homeschool my 8-year-old stepdaughter.
I take the time to assess each students learning style and tailor the material to their individuality. This makes learning fun and memorable. I am patient, easy-going, and able to quickly adjust to changing moods of students. Hands-on learning is my favorite way to teach.

More About This Tutor...

As an older student I was very driven to achieve a high level of excellence in my education, hardly ever missing a class. I earned my bachelor's degree from Oregon State University, taking mainly writing and literature. In my master's program I did a lot of writing classes and I focused mainly on publishing, and subjects such as editing and grammar. Instead of taking Spanish, I took statistics. This was very hard and I passed all three math classes after not having any math for many years. I also did some technical writing and creative writing. My computer skills are pretty good also, as I had to learn how to do desk top publishing, and many other computer skills.
I graduated with my master's three years ago, so I haven't had any actual teaching, but I have tutored for the community college where I live. I tutored essay writing and some math. I was also certified as a tutor through ... read more

My name is Julie.I am the elder sister.Linda has ALWAYS love kids. From baby dolls to working in the church nursery at the age of about six (in fact, any time she came up missing on Sunday mornings we knew to check the church nursery!), to getting married and looking forward to having children of her own.Linda demonstrates herself to be an intelligent individual. She is a hard worker as well.Whatever issue is before her, she rolls up her sleeves and gets the job done. And I know that this is just one of the areas where the kids feel safe with Linda because both of her girls have told me this in the past. They know for a fact that she loves them more than her own life, and if they ever need anything she will take care of it for them.

I love working with people and have done my best to always be doing so throughout my life. While in high school, I tutored and mentored other high school students. While in college, I started working with all age groups (pre-K through college), working as a mentor and a tutor for fellow college students. I have learned the importance of adapting my teaching style to the person that I am working with in order to help them succeed. I want every person that I help to reach his or her full potential. I will feel exceptionally honored if you choose me to make a difference in your child’s life.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with people from a wide spectrum of ages, backgrounds, and abilities. I believe everyone has a capacity to learn and grow, and I find great personal enjoyment in seeing a struggling student begin to blossom. I am patient, supportive, and compassionate. I greatly enjoy my current job, but miss the opportunity to be involved in human growth and education. I would love the opportunity to help students to find their own personal academic success.
I come from a family which highly values broad education in all fields. My degree in Studio Art allowed me to explore a broad range of academic topics. During college I volunteered at the California Raptor Center in raptor rehab and education, participating in community outreach and educational programs with students of all ages, from kindergarten to senior citizens. I love watching the face of a child when they realize that they have mastered a word that previously eluded them. When I tutor a child in reading, I will ask them questions about what they like to learn or how they like to have the teacher teach them and then base my tutoring off their answers. This way, the child feels involved in the process as well as gains the knowledge in a manner that feels correct for them to learn. I have had much success with tutoring children this way. I love the chance to make a child a reader.

I have recently graduated from Grove City College (PA) with a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology. During my undergraduate studies, I was introduced to a curriculum largely in the fields of chemistry, physics, advanced mathematics (calculus I,II,III),genetics and biochemistry. I was exposed to a very rigorous survey of the general sciences with demanding writing requirements. Likewise, I am very proficient at communicating in the language of science. I have also taught several mid-term and final review sessions as an upper classmen.
As a counselor for two summers at Camp Harlow (eugene, OR), I had my hands full playing, mentoring, and getting know up to twelve kids every week from the ages of 5-14. I love the field of education and am especially talented when it comes to working with elementary-aged students (all subjects). I have a B.A. in Social Work with a Spanish minor. I have teaching certificates in elementary ed., special ed., teaching English as a 2nd Language & Spanish. I have an M.A. in International Relations. I have tutored students in E.S.L., reading, writing, Spanish and elementary math.

All students can succeed with the right guidance and support. I am an engaging, hands-on, creative teacher. I earn the trust of my students by setting clear expectations, being consistent, fair, honest, and patient. I am a firm believer in positive reinforcement to achieve desired behavior and performance. My students know I have their best interest. I follow a constructivist philosophy. Students learn best and become engaged when exposed to real life material that they can make sense of and can construct meaning from. I also believe that discourse in the classroom, the opportunity for students to share dialogue and articulate their learning to their peers is empowering.

I have been an educator for over 10 years. Even as an undergrad, I was interested in working with children and spent my summers employed with the YMCA's youth programs. My experience is working with at-risk youth from kindergarten to high school seniors. My Master's degree in education combines coursework in special education and talented and gifted. I have tutored and taught students in all subjects both core curriculum and electives. My certification covers Kindergarten through Ninth grade.
I enjoy teaching. Working with a student one-to-one or even in small groups allows a student to have their individual needs met. Tutoring has the advantage of catching the student where they are struggling to comprehend. I am patient, creative, and prefer to model examples for my students. I believe that a strong foundation in the basics will help a student grasp more difficult concepts. ... read more

Everyone has a distinct learning style and attitude. I relish the opportunity to present subject matter to students in the precise manner that invokes that "eureka" moment where they finally achieve understanding of something that has frustrated, intimidated, or eluded them. I use humor and positive reinforcement to inspire confidence in my students. I believe that all people can learn, regardless of age or experience. They just need the proper guide.
I am driven to learn as well as to teach. I have a BS in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences and an MA in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, both of which have afforded me great experience not only in the sciences but also in writing skills. Over the last 11 years, I have taught and tutored students from elementary-aged to adult in English, writing, science, math, and test prep.
