A Little Bit About Me...

Hello everyone. I am an international student from China, and currently I am a PhD student in University of Florida. As a native Chinese, I attended the best secondary schools and that I speak standard, tactful Chinese. I have been studying and living in the US for more than 4 years, which makes me a fluent English speaker to easily communicate with. I started tutoring Chinese in 2011 when I was volunteering for the university language service center in University of Wisconsin. During my study in Stony Brook University, I also tutored several ESL students to help them get through the cultural and language barrier upon their arrival in the US. I enjoy teaching and making connections between languages. I'm also good with children.

English ESOL is one of my top subjects! For 3 years I have offered Chinese international students my services to help them gain a better understanding of American culture and the English language. As a Mandarin Chinese speaker, I am uniquely qualified to make the transition from China to an American campus as easy as possible. For those three years my goal has been to make certain that the students I tutor are in the best position possible to make the most of their American education.

Prior to serving in the United States Army, I was a successful entrepreneur in NJ. In 2003, I was recruited and after serving I returned to train troops at the Infantry Training Brigade at Fort Benning, GA. After returning home, I began working at a financial firm and became a licensed Investment Advisor and Asset Manager. I ran the Manasquan Edward Jones branch office until deciding to return to school. I studied Political Science at the University of Florida completing their International Relations program Cum Laude. Studies in International Relations focused on the international global economy, international agencies, national security, international political theory, and other aspects of public policy. I received minors in History and Chinese Language & Business Culture. While studying the Chinese Mandarin language, I became an asset to my Chinese counterparts (and visa versa) to gai ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My name is Wenjing Luo, a 24-year-old girl who is from China. I am fluent in English and Chinese. I have been living in the U.S. for three years. I first came to the U.S. to participate in a cultural exchange program when I was a freshman in college. It was at that time that I developed my interest of exploring another country with completely different culture from mine. After I graduated from college, I came back to the U.S. and got my Master of Education Degree at Vanderbilt University. During my two years of graduate study at Vanderbilt, I actively participated in lots of volunteering and intern opportunities in K-12 school settings. I worked with kindergarten, 3rd, 4th, 7th, and high school students by engaging in some activities, such as guided-reading, math tutoring, and game playing. These experiences provided an area for me to apply what I had learned in school into real-lif ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I decided at the age of 38 to attend college and earn my BA of Education degree. I have worked with and coached young people most of my life on a volunteer basis. Teaching has always been one of my passions. I have worked with students with learning disabilities in my eleven years of teaching. I have taught all the core subjects from grades 3-12. My favorite subject to teach/tutor is math. I enjoy seeing my students progress in their learning.
I like to challenge my students to reach their potential. I realize there is a fine line between challenging and frustrating my students. I like for my students to figure out math problems on their own as much as possible. My teaching style is to model new material, do guided practice, and independent practice. Hopefully by the time they finish this process they have mastered the particular lesson.

A Little Bit About Me...

I first began my love of teaching and tutoring children when I was a senior in high school. As the president of my school's National Honor Society, I began a tutoring program that enabled elementary and middle school students to be tutored by high school students. I continued to volunteer and tutor students while I earned my BS in Human and Organizational Development from Vanderbilt University. I am furthering my interest in education and working with children by pursuing my PhD in School Psychology at the University of Florida. I recently tutored a student in reading and writing for almost 1 year. I have always enjoyed math and science, so I would be happy to tutor a student in those areas in addition to reading and writing.
In my doctoral program, I am specializing in working with students with special needs and disabilities. Therefore, I strongly believe that every child can le ... read more

More About This Tutor...

My idea of a perfect classroom is one in which all students are actively involved. I believe in encouraging students to work together to create their own understandings of the subject matter and how it relates to their lives. It is important that students are able to apply school studies to the real world outside of the classroom.
I have taught Language Arts and Reading for 15 years at the middle school level. My Florida certification includes Middle School and ESOL endorsements. For the last six months, I have been employed as a tutor in the athletic program at the University of Florida. I am also pursuing a Master's Degree in English Education at this institution.

More About This Tutor...

I graduated from Vanderbilt in 2004 with a major in philosophy and a minor in geology. My overall GPA was 3.674/4.000. I enjoy using both sides of my brain, so to speak. Through philosophy, I mastered formalities of the English language and developed an aptitude for critical and logical thinking. Through geology, I focused on the practical through the application of mathematical and scientific concepts. I have tutored students in math, English, and the sciences. There is no subject area I can't tackle!
I enjoy helping others understand concepts that they are struggling with. It is very gratifying when a student has that "a ha" moment. I am a little strict with instruction. If a student is not paying attention or has not completed an assignment that I've asked him/her to do, I will not overlook it. I think that, in the interest of the end goal of improving grades, ... read more

I believe that good teaching, like quality learning, comes with hard work. Having had the chance to see students grow with time, I have learned that patience, respect, and having fun are the best ingredients for a productive and positive learning experience. Often times, having a positive mentor can be that major difference in a student's life, and to that end I believe that tutoring is about more than just academic learning, but also about building relationships and learning essential life skills.
Although my chosen field of study is history, my passion is for education and learning. While earning both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees, I have acquired an essential skill set for working in the academic world, which includes excellent writing, reading, and critical-thinking skills, in addition to a proficiency in Spanish acquired through years of classroom study and travel in L ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Children are complex beings and I find teaching to be extremely challenging. I always strive to find the best means possible for maximizing the potential of each learner. Every student is different and so I strive to accomodate every student's learning styles. As a musician I often use the arts as a means of guiding students in other subject areas. By doing this, I believe I am a more effective teacher, but most importantly the student becomes more successful. A positive learning experience for a child can have far reaching effects. Ultimately, I believe that a teacher and a student's family are the most powerful influences in a child's life. It is always my hope that every child can become a productive and ethical citizen.

During my Doctoral studies in Spanish Literature at University of Florida from 1992 through 2005, I have tutored several students in Spanish, and some in English Grammar. Some individual students used my services over long periods, one in particular for about two years. I am able to provide references from the parents of the latter. I earned my B.A. and M.A. in Languages and Linguistics from Florida Atlantic University. I went on to graduate from University of Florida in 2005 with a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature.
I begin my tutoring session by determining the area of Spanish or English Grammar in which the student shows the most difficulty. I ask my student to present a copy of his or her last exam. I engage the student in Spanish conversation at the appropriate level, and I examine his or her reading and writing ability in the language. In contrast to what I have observed from many ... read more

After earning a Bachelor’s degree in a Social Science from the University of Florida, I feel that I have gained a well rounded education in all areas including English, mathematics, biology and natural sciences.I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Health because I love to learn. I have been working with children ages 3-14 since I was 15 years old. I spent my summers working as a summer camp counselor. In college I worked for an organization called America Reads and tutored approximately 10 elementary students in reading. Together we read books at their specific reading levels and played games to that allowed them to build better reading and writing skills.
After working with children for several years, I believe that every child can learn and do great as long as they are shown patience, compassion, and are rewarded for their good work and improvement. I think th ... read more

All students can gain great benefits from participating in rigorous coursework and being encouraged to think critically. I am a firm believer in using differentiation techniques to allow students, regardless of level, to access and engage with the subject matter in a meaningful way. Students I work with are provided with a variety of tools and techniques to use as they create meaning, and fit that new learning into their own schema. I am patient and kind with students I teach, without sacrificing high expectations to do so. I strive to create an environment where learning is valued, students are respected, and the joys of learning are discovered.
Reading, writing, and speaking are essential skills that students of all levels would be well advised to hone and perfect. Throughout my teaching experiences, I have striven to assist both teachers and students to use words thoughtful ... read more

I seek to help all students gain confidence in their writing and reading abilities. I have helped students in honing these skills in order to use writing for discovery, for organization, planning, and forethought, and for critical thinking. I find engaged teaching to be a wonderful experience, especially one-on-one and in small groups. Students usually direct my teaching style because I am present mainly to facilitate learning and to act as a guide.

I like to learn where the student is (not the age/grade, etc) and build from there. Success for the student is very important because without confidence, we are all lost. I like to be organized with certain levels to be attained. Achieving those levels and goals sometimes calls for creativity and diversity. I like to think of myself as creative and adaptable. I have many materials which have proven to be very successful for building confidence and ability while filling in the missing gaps for the student. I am a firm believer in teaching through discovery and in providing a constructivist approach to learning.
