I have been a tutor at Phoenix college for one semester. I tutored all math and physics courses. Tutoring gives me the opportunity to help others, but it has also strengthened because I allowed me to remember few simple things that I have seen in the past and have forgotten. It really changed me and my career path is now teaching.

Calculus I is one of my top subjects! I taught Calculus I for DeVry University for over fifteen years. I also was a curriculum assurance reviewer for a year in the development of Calculus I for online high schools.

I am able to break a complex problem into small, discrete steps which the students seem to appreciate. An approach I use in my teaching is the I rarely will tell the student outright what to do to get the answer or just what the answer is. I will quiz the student in the steps they took to reach the point where they are stuck. If there is a misstep they took in their work, I will ask them leading questions in an effort to help them discover where they went astray, followed by questions to help them realize the step they should have taken. Then I will guide them through reasoning out what the remaining steps for solving the problem should be. When I was teaching high school freshman Algebra I, I develop a strategy for mastering word problems that was successful to the point that students actually enjoyed doing word problems.
I have taught both high school and college level c ... read more

I believe that there is not one way to teach everybody. Everyone learns in a different way and at different speeds. I like to help a person understand a topic in the best way for them, not just learn how to use a formula to crank out a number. I believe that practice makes perfect and I approach each person with the attitude that it takes work and repetition to gain the desired understanding.
I am a recent graduate of Arizona State University. Having used tutors myself I know of the great help that they can be to one who is struggling with a certain subject. Having experience with tutors and in tutoring others in mathematics has been a great help and a great source of joy in my life. Using my knowledge and passion for a subject and the ability to use the materials that a student is currently using to teach them is a source of pride for me. I enjoy being able to review a topic to se ... read more

My comments on tutoring Calculus I : Been a while since I remembered it. Will need to brush up myself.

One on One is the ideal method for me as it allows time dedicated to the tutored. It makes them feel special and appreciated and also allows time for coaching and motivation.
My experience in Tutoring is a bit fleeting only having done it in odds and ends; non-professionally at best, but as I see progress in others, it inspires ME to grow. Also knowing that I have helped in some small part further encourages me to help out more. I don't have any track record to speak of but I what I hope to provide for those under my wing is a chance to believe, as motivator Les Brown would say, "It's Possible that I can succeed!" THAT'S what students REALLY need to know.

I love to use examples when I teach and I encourage the students to find their own mistakes. I think that once they can find their mistakes, they have a good grasp of the material. Through my experience with various different types of students, I have learned to adapt to their way of learning. Some may prefer practice while others may prefer hands on methods.
I have been a math and physics tutor at Gateway Community College since 2008 and I have experience in various different styles of tutoring. All the students that I have tutored have seen at least 2 letter grade increase.

I offer a pupil the twin goals of attaining the competence and character needed to succeed in their chosen field. I demonstrate the need for teacher and student to operate with empathy and active listening while we support each other in mastery of our tasks. My colleagues and principals normally appreciate my suggestions for improving “best practices “. I am an innovator with a passion for excellence. My interests and abilities in mathematics, physics, soccer, cycling, and triathlon is a result of developing in a gender-free environment. My upper-level college mathematics courses were my first experience with just how much women were underrepresented in the sciences. I was genuinely intimidated and surprised by the lack of females in my classes. During those years, I questioned my ability more often than not. Although I did not earn straight A’s, I did learn that I am equally as able to succeed in mathematics as the males that continue to surround me. I can now take on challenges and overcome gender stereotypes that would limit most women. I was fortunate to learn that gender, race, religion, etc. does not dictate where one succeeds.
I enjoy making mathematics understandable to anyone. Often times I work with students who are overwhelmed by mathematics “foreign language” and ar ... read more
