More About This Tutor...

as a graduate of San Jose State University I have a lot of pride in my command of the English language. I am a stickler for proper grammar and spelling in all of the correspondence that I send. I have produced a wide variety of effective communication projects over the years and continue to strive for perfection. I have mentored many assistants in the business and practice of communications and photography. Many of them have established their own studios throughout the state.
My style of teaching starts with observations, questions and then active listening. With a valid agenda and skills assessment I can put an effective learning plan into place. I have a great deal of patience and continually seek to hone my teaching skills and be an inspirational mentor.

My first visit is just an assessment of where the student began to get lost regardless of the age or level. More often that not, they have to memorize their fractions to decimal to percentage conversion from 1/2 to 1/12. Given this underlying knowledge allows me to focus on the subject at hand. I usually recommend purchasing a Spark Notes or something similar for the subject as a reference guide. I use examples from the book to review, and assist in homework. I do not do the homework for them, however, do ask how they will approach it before diving in. I add tips and tricks and different ways to approaching the problem. I also assist in anxiety control, study and organization habits.

I enjoy teaching and see it as one of my gifts. In all of my jobs I've seen it as my goal to help others learn and grow. I believe that everyone is a natural learner, everyone is curious. Each of us has a different learning style and I am sensitive to that in each person that I teach. I am a naturally calm and friendly person and I always discover something I like about the people with whom I work. I love to inspire and encourage and help learners experience the joy of discovery.

As an educator, it is my job to recognize each child’s individual learning-style and adapt my teaching-style accordingly. I will build upon each child’s abilities and strengths, and work to improve upon his/her limitations. By reinforcing the student’s positive habits and capabilities, I hope, not only, to assist with the subject at hand, but to encourage each child’s desire to meet his/her full potential in every setting, academic or otherwise. Combining my comprehension of behavioral psychology and my vast experience with children, I believe that I am well-qualified to assist any child in attaining his or her educational goals. Further, I believe that learning can (and should) be fun, and hope to instill that in each of my students.

I love to teach, there is nothing more self rewarding then helping a person who is struggling to achieve something and helping them with their goals. I am a valedictorian candidate, graduating with a degree in English. My background in English is both technical, focusing on classics in British and early American literature, while my position as editor of the Sierra Nevada Review, an annual publication of poetry, affords me a creative grasp of writing. I am also the assistant coordinator of the Sierra Nevada Tutoring Center. During my time at the center, I have helped institute protocols for L2 learners and have instructed tutors on methods of tutoring. I have been a tutor for four years, and have tutored all ages, including elementary school children learning to read, as well as adults working on dissertations.
I emphasize meaning in my instructional style. Rather than, say, inculcate a formula for comma us, I try to convey how comma use provides meaningful structure to an idea, i.e. the sentence. In the larger sphere of t ... read more
