A Little Bit About Me...

In my own experience, the key to learning has been to find a "critical link:" that is, to figure out an angle that makes sense to my brain. It is one thing to be exposed to a subject, and another to understand, remember and easily employ what is learned. Everybody thinks differently, so the key is to discuss and explore the topic with a student until you see that they've experienced that "aha" moment. This is why tutoring is so important, in my opinion. This is the core of the approach I take to tutoring my peers, presenting ideas to professors, and to teaching younger students.
I received my Bachelors of Arts degree from Willamette University, where I majored in politics and minored in economics. A Little Bit About Me...

Having graduated from a liberal arts university, I know that being well-rounded is very important in life. I graduated from Whitworth with a BS in Math and minors in Spanish and Computer Science, so I know what it is like to learn complex subjects. I have tutored my peers along with students younger and older than myself, as a mathematician and a Spanish speaker. I led a Spanish Live Lab for two years and informally tutored math for four. Also, I have a great deal of grammatical knowledge from writing research papers in math and computer science and Spanish.

I have 2 college age children and 2 elementary age twins. My college age children have both taken math through calculus so I have had many opportunities to tutor them over the years in advanced math. My teaching philosophy is first to have the knowledge for the subjects. Then, I think you need to understand the youth learning styles and to find out where they are with their knowledge and then begin from there. Certainly some refreshing maybe necessary, but most of the time the youth is behind so the teaching would focus on helping them reach their potential and moving forward.
During the summers of college I was trained in Project Read and organizational skills. I then tutored youth from grade school to high school in math and science from grade school math to algebra and geometry the same for science.
