A Little Bit About Me...

My approach to teaching involves finding the best learning venue for each individual student. I don't believe in 'fitting' the student to the method, rather finding the method that works for each individual. I use phonetics when that is the simplest method, the challenge of games/competition when that is what clicks for my student. I have even used graphics to create a learning environment for students who lack imagination! The goose-bumps I get when I see the 'lightbulb' of recognition turn on in a student's eyes remains my reason for wanting to share the pursuit of knowledge with everyone! When tutoring I usually ask prompting questions to assist the person in working through a problem. By building off of the skills the student already has it helps them better understand the process. If a student is learning new material or does not understand the way something was explained I will try to come up with an alternative method. I will go through an example with them step by step ensuring that they understand what happens along the way. I try to relate problems to real life so that they will remember what they have learned better.

A Little Bit About Me...

I tend to teach things in a visual way. Drawing pictures, diagrams and using visual aides are the best ways I have witnessed to teach kids. I also think a structured reward system is HUGE in motivating kids to succeed. You need to find out what motivates your kid (money, toys, etc) and set up a system where he/she can earn these rewards through academic success.
I am currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. Before I started medical school I worked as a tutor for six years with two teenage boys with autism.
