My comments on tutoring Reading Comprehension : It's one thing to read, but it's another thing entirely to understand and retain what you just read. I teach skills that will allow students to absorb information that they read, which helps not only in their daily lives, but in test preparation as well.

I'm very laid back, but I know how to get results. I have always been a very disciplined student, but I realized pretty early in my academic career that unless I make the subject interesting for me, I'll never grasp the material. I make it a point to get to know every student so that I can personalize their learning style. The only way they'll learn and understand something is if they WANT to do so. I offer a different approach to things that students may not get in the classroom, to hopefully expand their interest in a subject they never thought they'd like.

My comments on tutoring Reading Comprehension : I use a student's schemata as a jumping off point, this technique gives students the opportunity to be comfortable with specific subject matters.

Thirty-three hours toward a Master's Degree in Urban Education, Four-year degree in General Studies with the majority of classes in Math and Education. I use computers to help students with reading comprehension and to visually represent concepts to raise achievement levels. Additionally, I will be fully-certified by May of 2013.
I am a facilitator of many styles of teaching, I use visual aids, kinesthetics, tactile, musical, etc. when teaching.

Language and Social Studies Tutor Now Accepting Students

I believe that anyone can learn. I approach history as a story (albeit a very detailed one) and languages as a skill set. I don't do rote memorization, but instead emphasize the patterns, causes, and effects of concepts. If you can begin to understand the why and the patterns behind concepts, the material becomes more meaningful and a lot of the need for rote memorization is removed.
