I've been tutoring since high schools in a wide range of subjects, such as latin, algebra II, and biology. The skills you use to teach yourself the material can be directly applied to someone else, especially when you find something does not click at first. I have a number of mnemonics for helping my tutees retain the material they've spent time learning. In college I don't tutor professionally because of time constraints, but I help other students understand problems they may be having difficulty with. I like teaching by giving real life examples and creating hands-on situations. One of the most beneficial things that I have found in helping students is to give a variety of examples and offer different ways of explaining things. Another important thing, especially with math, is the ability to be patient.

During my undergraduate work I was a teacher’s assistant (T.A.) for two years. As a T.A. it was my job to run physics for other undergraduates. This included both the calculus based physics and non-calculus based physics. I also worked with an elementary teacher as part of an outreach program to bring science into the class room. The setting as a Sunday school teacher is different than the usual classroom experience. However, the parents and elders expect results and it is very satisfying to see the children respond with good answers and, especially, with good questions for me. I have learned so very much from my students. I have taught and encouraged little ones from toddlers to 12 years of age, both boys and girls.
