I Make Less Mess and More Message Out of Math

I listen intently to what students ask to decipher their level of understanding. I wish for the students to truely understand and not merely mimic. Math is thinking. Too often I see people who at first are struggling with math treating it as a mimicing subject. Some repetitive practice is needed, but understanding prior to the repetition is better.
I have been teaching since I started college. I taught in the tutoring center at SIUE as a freshman. Since then I have taught a wide variety of classes at Lewis and Clark Community College and St. Louis Community College. I also have had students that I have tutored for many years until they moved off to college. Even then I sometimes was called for tutoring when they were back home. I also have helped with middle and high school math contest teams

Tutoring has been a somewhat informal yet ever-present aspect of both my collegiate life and professional career. While focusing on pursuing my civil engineering degree at Purdue University, I realized the value that peers with non-engineering degrees saw in my unique gifts with mathematics. Although I never pursued formal teaching certifications, I have worked with several people, both recently and in the past, to realize their full potential to understand both basic as well as advanced level mathematics concepts.

More About This Tutor...

As a tutor, I understand my responsibility primarily as that of helping children reach their potential. I try to help my students understand concepts they are struggling with in primarily three ways. First, I find what their strengths are and see if I can extend understanding of these concepts to the one's they are struggling with. Secondly, I use many examples of a concept to break complex math down into simpler, concise ideas and problem-solving techniques. Third, I try a number of different conceptual approaches to determine which is the most useful for a particular student.
As a student at the University of Chicago, I have tutored at the local Ray Elementary school through the Neighborhood Schools program. A Little Bit About Me...

As a supplemental Instructor/tutor at UMSL Department of Biology, I facilitate the learning process by explaining concepts and encouraging open communication with students. In addition, I conduct weekly review sessions to integrate how-to-learn with what-to-learn. I grade exams and laboratory reports.
Since students learn in many ways—by seeing and hearing; reflecting and acting; reasoning logically and intuitively; memorizing and visualizing,I provide various guidelines for how I want tasks completed in this course based upon student pool. Students might describe me as a knowledgeable coach who dispenses the fact, principles, and concepts they need and works closely with someone to correct problems in how they think and behave. I give students a lot of personal support and encouragement to do well in their course.

A Little Bit About Me...

Upon graduating from an accredited college, Saint Louis University, I was confident that I would use my education in the best way possible. One of the principles that SLU teaches its student is to give back to the community. In my opinion, there is no better way to do than through education. My experience includes 3 years of mentoring with Mentor St.Louis. During this time, I was paired with one or two students during the school year. We would have 2 sessions a month where we'd read books and teach the months lesson. I have tutored my younger siblings through elementary and middle school. I have a strong love and am enthusiatic about math. I have always excelled in this area. Speacialty areas are trig and all levels of alegebra.

In the fall, I will pursue a master's degree in civil engineering. Even though my fortes are in math and science, I believe that I have more than sufficient written and communication skills that would be valuable in tutoring. In high school, I tutored advanced algebra for a year, and I also taught Spanish to elementary school students. I also have tutoring experience working with high school age African immigrants. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy helping others to succeed. I believe in taking a personal interest in students success; reviewing each quiz and test taken to see where strengths lie and where improvements needed to be made. I also believe that people have different means of learning, from reading and lecturing; to seeing and gaining hands on experience. I also believe that no student is beyond help; they simply have not yet found thier means of gaining and retaining the knowledge.
While attending Southwestern Illinois College, I volunteered as a tutor, instructing college level Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus. Also gave instruction in Biology and Chemistry. While pursuing my degree in electrical engineering, I expanded my knowledge in Math and Science. I also gained insight from a student prospective.

I have a very unique way of teaching. My key to success works on a system of discipline and rewards. I find creative ways to make the most mundane tasks fun to accomplish. I think the number on rule in teaching strategy should be finding a way to make the process enjoyable. I believe most kids that do poorly in school have an incredibly hard time putting their hearts into tutoring. In my professional experience, it is almost like pouring salt on the wound when they don't do well in school and then have to suffer through more torture after school.
