More About This Tutor...

Tutoring has been a somewhat informal yet ever-present aspect of both my collegiate life and professional career. While focusing on pursuing my civil engineering degree at Purdue University, I realized the value that peers with non-engineering degrees saw in my unique gifts with mathematics. Although I never pursued formal teaching certifications, I have worked with several people, both recently and in the past, to realize their full potential to understand both basic as well as advanced level mathematics concepts.

I Make Less Mess and More Message Out of Math

I listen intently to what students ask to decipher their level of understanding. I wish for the students to truely understand and not merely mimic. Math is thinking. Too often I see people who at first are struggling with math treating it as a mimicing subject. Some repetitive practice is needed, but understanding prior to the repetition is better.
I have been teaching since I started college. I taught in the tutoring center at SIUE as a freshman. Since then I have taught a wide variety of classes at Lewis and Clark Community College and St. Louis Community College. I also have had students that I have tutored for many years until they moved off to college. Even then I sometimes was called for tutoring when they were back home. I also have helped with middle and high school math contest teams

A Little Bit About Me...

Upon graduating from an accredited college, Saint Louis University, I was confident that I would use my education in the best way possible. One of the principles that SLU teaches its student is to give back to the community. In my opinion, there is no better way to do than through education. My experience includes 3 years of mentoring with Mentor St.Louis. During this time, I was paired with one or two students during the school year. We would have 2 sessions a month where we'd read books and teach the months lesson. I have tutored my younger siblings through elementary and middle school. I have a strong love and am enthusiatic about math. I have always excelled in this area. Speacialty areas are trig and all levels of alegebra.
I do beleive that knowledge is power. I am a knowledge seeker and am inclined to share that knowledge that I have acquired. Children are the biggest knowle ... read more

I have four years teaching experience in all levels of education. I have been involved helping students improve their learning skills. Students need a teacher that can break complex problems to simple forms for better understanding, and this is my role. I have experience in math and science.

A Little Bit About Me...

To me, the very ability to understand and visualize Mathematics, has more importance than the very art of solving problems at the budding stages. Certainly grades are awarded on the basis of artwork , but if the student has not understood the basic fundamental theory behind any problem, then not much credit can be given to slick solutions that most students commit to memory before every math test. I strive to lay more emphasis on background and source of a problem than just laying down the answers. I am very passionate about this subject and make sure every student (including mine) loves it as much as I do.
I am currently a Doctoral student and a teacher at SLU, and and I strive to create the same academic environment that I had undergone in my previous years as a mathematics student. Competed my Masters in Pure Mathematics in 2007 , I have coached and tutored mostly college st ... read more

I believe that the most important element determining the degree to which a student will achieve is the level of expectations that are set for them. High, clear expectations with consistent feedback on progress is absolutely critical to making the most significant academic gains possible. Students should know exactly what they are expected to do, and should be able to track their own progress towards demanding goals along the way. When students are asked to excel, they rise higher than they thought they could.

Not everyone learns in the same way. I try to discern how the student I am tutoring learns best, whether it's by just doing examples, or visually by physically relating the material to something easier to understand. After I have found out how best to teach my student, I am able to move forward and help them to the best of my ability. In my tutoring experience, I have always been respectful and curteous to my students. I believe that students are much more likely to confident in their learning if they feel as if they are respected their teacher/tutor. I also make sure to be supportive even when the student is struggling and then compliment them when they make great strides.

As a tutor, I understand my responsibility primarily as that of helping children reach their potential. I try to help my students understand concepts they are struggling with in primarily three ways. First, I find what their strengths are and see if I can extend understanding of these concepts to the one's they are struggling with. Secondly, I use many examples of a concept to break complex math down into simpler, concise ideas and problem-solving techniques. Third, I try a number of different conceptual approaches to determine which is the most useful for a particular student.
